A liquid crystal panel () as an optical modulator includes: a driving board (C) having a plurality of signal lines, a plurality of switching elements connected to the signal lines and a plurality of picture electrodes connected to the switching elements; an opposing board (D) being opposed to the driving board (C) and having common electrodes; and a flexible printed board (E) electrically connected with the plurality of signal lines and the common electrodes, the flexible printed board extended from between the driving board (C) and the opposing board (D). The flexible printed board (E) is provided with an insertion hole (E) for a fluid circulator in which a cooling fluid is circulated to be inserted.

Optical modulator, optical device and projector

An optical device () includes: a optical modulator holder () that has inside thereof a cooling chamber in which a cooling fluid is encapsulated, and holds a optical modulator in such a manner that heat can be transferred between the optical modulator holder and the cooling fluid within the cooling chamber; a plurality of fluid circulation members () that are connected to the cooling chamber of the optical modulator holder () for mutual communication to guide the cooling fluid outside the cooling chamber and guide the cooling fluid inside the cooling chamber, again; and a main tank () that is arranged in the flow path of the cooling fluid in the plurality of fluid circulation members () and accumulates the cooling fluid. The main tank () has a cooling fluid inlet section for allowing the main tank () to be replenished with the cooling fluid.

An optical modulator holder () has an optical modulator holding unit () having a substantially rectangular U-shaped cross-section and made of heat-conductive material, a plate-like member () made of heat-conductive material, and an optical modulator cooling unit () constituted by a hollow member which is capable of enclosing cooling fluid inside and is made of heat-conductive material. Of the optical modulator holding unit () and the plate-like member (), peripheries of openings (AA) each contact heat-transferably a liquid crystal panel (). The liquid crystal panel () is held inside the rectangular U-shape of the optical modulator holding unit (). The optical modulator cooling unit () is formed like a ring whose inner side surface heat-transferably contacts the liquid crystal panel (), and has an inlet port (D) and outlet port (E).

Cooling chambers (R, R) for accommodating therein a cooling fluid for cooling a liquid crystal panel () are formed inside a pair of frame members () constituting an optical modulator holder (). There are provided, in the pair of frame members (), inlet ports (D,D) for inletting a cooling fluid into the cooling chambers (R, R), outlet ports (E,E) for discharging the cooling fluid inside the cooling chambers (R, R) to the outside, and a buffer section (Bf) for temporally accumulating the cooling fluid flowing therein via the inlet ports (D,D) and rectifying a flow direction of the cooling fluid to a direction parallel to an optical modulation face and/or to a direction perpendicular to the optical modulation face.

The three optical modulator holders () are fitted respectively to the three light-incident surfaces of the cross dichroic prism () through three supporting members (). The fluid feed-in section () is fitted to the top surface of the cross dichroic prism (). The fluid branching section () and the fluid pressurizing/feeding section () are laid one on the other and fitted to the lower surface of the cross dichroic prism ().

An optical device () includes fluid circulating member link sections () that can link a plurality of fluid circulating members (). System and method for providing a substrate having micro-lenses

A red-reflecting film and a blue-reflecting film are formed in a substantially X shape on joint surfaces defined by the respective side faces of four columnar prisms or right-angle prisms. The red-reflecting film is continuously formed without separating at an intersection of the two reflecting films. The blue-reflecting film is, on the other hand, divided into two pieces by the red-reflecting film and an adhesive. It is preferable that that four columnar prisms are obtained from one block of sheet glass. This arrangement ensures an improvement in properties of a resulting light-selective prism.
