The present invention provides an organic electroluminescent device exhibiting a long life, a high luminance, and a high efficiency. An organic electroluminescent device comprising on a substrate an anode, a hole transport layer, an organic light-emitting layer, and a cathode, wherein the organic light-emitting layer contains an organic compound having a pyridine ring, a pyrazine ring, or a triazine ring as a partial structure and the hole transport layer contains a monoamine compound represented by the following formula (I): wherein Rto Rrepresent a hydrogen atom, an aryl group, or an alkyl group; Rto Rmay be the same or different from each other; and Rto Rmay further have an aryl group or an alkyl group as a substituent in the case where Rto Rare an aryl group or an alkyl group.

An object of the invention is to provide a charge transporting material having an excellent heat resistance, excellent filming properties, an excellent charge transporting ability, and excellent light-emitting characteristics and, also, to provide an organic electroluminescent element providing a high luminance and a highly luminous efficiency and having a long life. The invention relates to a charge transporting material comprising a compound having within the molecule two or more pyridine rings substituted at 2-, 4- and 6-positions thereof, which rings do not substantially conjugate each other (provided that the 3- and 5-positions of the pyridine rings may be substituted) and an organic electroluminescent element using the charge transporting material.
