A cowling assembly for an outboard motor includes an improved construction that can supply relatively cool air containing little water to the induction device and can also supply air to cool engine components without reducing the charging efficiency. The outboard motor has an engine that includes an air induction device and is enclosed within the cowling. The cowling assembly defines a closed cavity in which the engine is contained and has an air intake system. An air intake duct structure introduces air into the cavity. The intake duct structure includes a plurality of relatively narrow connection passages and has an expansion chamber portion disposed on the downstream side of the passages. Intake noise is reduced by this construction. In one preferred form, the cowling assembly additionally has a second intake system. One or more connection passages communicate with the first air intake system and the second air intake system.

Intake system for outboard motor

An engine includes an air induction system, a fuel supply system, a lubrication system and a ventilation system. The fuel supply system has a fuel reservoir in which a space for fuel vapors is defined. The lubrication system lubricates a component of the engine with lubricant. The ventilation system couples a crankcase of the engine with the air induction system so as to deliver oil vapors in the crankcase to the air induction system. A fuel vapor passage is arranged to couple the space of the fuel reservoir with the ventilation system.

Fuel vapor emission system

A fuel supply system for use with an engine having four vertically-arranged cylinders and multiple charge formers prevents air or vapor pockets from accumulating within the fuel pump or fuel lines. A pair of fuel pumps are mounted vertically one above the other. A fuel inlet port of each pump is formed at the lower-most portion of the pump. A fuel discharge port is formed at the upper-most portion of each port. A conduit attached to the top fuel pump's discharge port supplies fuel to an uppermost and lowermost carburetor. A conduit from the lowermost fuel pump supplies fuel to the middle two carburetors. The uppermost carburetor's fuel inlet port is positioned vertically higher than the top fuel pump's discharge port. The second carburetor's fuel inlet port is positioned vertically higher than the second fuel pump's discharge port. Air or vapor pockets within the fuel lines naturally migrates through the fuel pump and through the fuel conduits into the carburetors without becoming trapped in the fuel supply system.

Outboard motor fuel supply system

A number of embodiments of four cycle outboard motors that have water cooled engines and an oil pan that is formed in the upper portion of the drive shaft housing. An exhaust pipe collects exhaust gases from an exhaust guide and delivers to a cavity that is formed in the oil pan by an interior wall thereof In many embodiments the exhaust pipe does not terminate below the lower surface of the oil pan and several arrangements are disclosed for delivering idle exhaust gases to the area between the exterior of the exhaust pipe and the interior surface of the oil pan that defines the cavity. Various arrangements are disclosed for conveying idle exhaust gases to this area and discharging them to the atmosphere through and above the water exhaust gas discharge. These arrangements incorporate a system for precluding water from entering into the engine through its exhaust system including the idle discharge.

Exhaust system for outboard motor

An overheat protecting system and method for an internal combustion engine wherein a preventive action is initiated if the engine temperature exceeds normal temperature but is still below the danger level. The engine is protected by providing additional cooling such as by supplying additional fuel to the engine. The dangerous condition may also be sensed if the engine temperature increases at more than a predetermined rate for more than a predetermined time or if the engine temperature is more than a predetermined amount for more than a predetermined time interval.

Engine overheat control system

A protective cowling and air silencing device for the power head of a watercraft propulsion unit. The cowling is provided with an atmospheric air inlet opening, and a duct is provided internally in the cowling for assisting in water separation by directing the inlet air downwardly toward a drain opening. The engine is provided with charge formers that have an air silencing device that is provided with at least one resonating chamber on the side of the charge former and which communicates with a delivery passage of the device through a tuning neck for silencing purposes.

Silencer for outboard motor

Two embodiments of cold starting and cold running enrichment devices for internal combustion engines, each of which provide an amount of fuel through a first circuit under the control of a first control valve during cold cranking for cold starting enrichment and a second fuel circuit having a second control valve for supplying fuel to the engine for cold running enrichment. In this way, adequate amounts of fuel are supplied under all circumstances.

Fuel feeding device for internal combustion engine

A control system for the ignition system of an internal combustion engine for providing faster idle speed when the engine is at a low temperature by advancing the spark timing. A first temperature sensor which senses actual temperature is mounted in the engine ignition control circuit which is, in turn, mounted in proximity to the engine so as to approximate its temperature. A on/off temperature switch is mounted directly in the engine so as to sense when engine temperature is above a predetermined value. The system is operative to provide ignition control by the actual engine temperature unless the second on/off switch is turned on to indicate that the engine temperature has not returned ambient temperature after a running period. If the engine temperature switch is on, normal ignition timing is employed.

Operational control system for engine

An outboard motor having a charge forming system including an enrichment fuel device that supplies additional fuel and air to the engine for starting and warm up. The fuel and air are supplied from one charge former of the engine and are delivered to a balance passage of a spacer between the charge formers and the intake manifold. The additional air supplied by the enrichment device is drawn from an air circuit of the carburetor so as to reduce the discharge pressure of the fuel discharge circuits of the carburetor to draw additional enrichment fuel from those discharge circuits when the enrichment device is in operation.

Fuel supplying device for marine propulsion engine

A number of embodiments of outboard motors incorporating fuel and air enrichment devices in which fuel is supplied to the engine for enrichment under pressure by a pump and additional air is also supplied to the engine induction system at least at atmospheric pressure. In some embodiments, the air is mixed with the fuel and is pressurized. The fuel and air flow are both controlled by a common valve member that may be operated either by a solenoid or a heated wax pellet.

Start boosting device for internal combustion engine

A number of embodiments of internal combustion engine exhaust systems each of which is effective to provide good silencing for exhaust gases through the use of an elastic diaphragm that dampens pulsations. In some embodiments, this elastic diaphragm forms a portion of a Helmholz resonator and in some the diaphragm is cooled by submerging in a cooling jacket of the engine or its exhaust system or by means of cooling air fins. Also, various arrangements are incorporated for adjusting or tuning the rigidity of the diaphragm. Furthermore, in some embodiment the diaphragm is suspended in such a way as to act as a vibration damping member between mechanical components of the exhaust system.

Exhaust silencing means for marine propulsion

Several embodiments of combined torsional and elastic couplings for transmitting power from an engine output shaft that experiences torque fluctuations and a driveshaft. In each embodiment, the flexible coupling includes an inertial member that is coupled either elastically or by means of a viscous body to the engine output shaft for absorbing the torsional vibrations. In addition, an elastic coupling couples the engine output shaft to the driveshaft for permitting limited relative rotation to absorb torque flux variations in the engine output shaft.

Vibration and torsional damping coupling for a power transmission

A fuel feed device for an internal combustion engine including a main fuel system including a charge forming device that supplies fuel, air requirements to the engine for most running conditions. An automatically operated auxiliary supply system is provided for supplying additional fuel and, in some instances, air to the engine in response to specific running conditions such as cold starting or cold enrichment. This system includes an automatically operated valve for controlling the fuel discharge. A manual override valve is provided that will permit manual selection of fuel enrichment or will shut off the fuel enrichment regardless of the condition of the automatic valve.
