An optical connection member is used for optical connection of a plurality of optical fibers, the optical connection member including: an end surface facing another optical connection member at the time of the optical connection; and a holding portion holding the plurality of optical fibers, wherein the holding portion is provided with a plurality of holding holes which are opened in the end surface, extend from the end surface in a first direction intersecting with the end surface, and hold the plurality of optical fibers, the end surface includes a first area, a second area, and a third area which are sequentially arranged along a second direction intersecting with the first direction, openings of the plurality of holding holes are arranged in a row in the second direction in the first area and the third area.

The ferrule has a rear end and a front end, an opening that is formed in the rear end and communicates with fiber holding holes holding the optical fibers formed from the rear end toward the front end, and first connection parts which are formed at the front end and to which the lens array is connected. A GRIN lens array of an embodiment has a structure for enabling a coupling face in which lens end faces of GRIN lenses are arranged, to be accurately polished so as to have a desired angle relative to optical axes of the GRIN lenses. The GRIN lens array has the GRIN lenses and a main body portion. The main body portion comprises a holding portion having a coupling face, and an edge portion having a reference face to be used as a reference in polishing of the coupling face. There are provided an optical fiber cutting method and a cutting apparatus which can easily cut a coated optical fiber without a step of removing a coating from the optical fiber. It includes a clamp which holds the coated optical fiber, having a glass fiber and the coating, on both sides of a portion-to-be-cut, a disk-shaped blade member which moves at the portion-to-be-cut in a direction orthogonal to an axis of the optical fiber to cut the coating and to provide a slit into the glass fiber, and a support which presses, with a predetermined pressing force, the portion-to-be-cut from an opposite side of the blade member with respect to the portion-to-be-cut when cutting the coating and providing the slit into the glass fiber. A head of the support is formed with a groove along a sliding direction of the blade member.

The present invention relates to an optical connector and an optical connector assembling method allowing simplification of assembly, improvement of reliability, and lower prices. The optical connector comprises a connector plug for holding a coated optical fiber and a connector socket for holding a coated optical fiber. The connector plug has a fiber holding portion disposed in a plug housing, and a fiber inserting hole is provided in the fiber holding portion. A fiber deflection space for allowing deflection of the coated optical fiber, when the coated optical fibers are butted, is provided in the plug housing. The connector socket has a fiber holding portion disposed in a socket housing, and a fiber inserting hole is provided in the fiber holding portion. A fiber deflection space for allowing deflection of the coated optical fiber, when the coated optical fibers are butted, is provided in the socket housing.

An optical fiber sheet comprises optical fibers sandwiched between sheet members and fixed thereto. Distal ends of the optical fibers extend from outer peripheral edges of the sheet members with resin coatings applied to the distal ends to produce extensions. The distal ends of the extensions are inserted into fiber holes of connectors with the resin coatings applied to the distal ends to be connected with the connectors.

Optical fiber sheet and its manufacturing method

The present invention relates to an optical fiber having a structure which allows further improvements to be made both in terms of lower reflectance and narrower bandwidth, and to a fiber grating type filter including the optical fiber. The optical fiber applied to the fiber grating type filter comprises a core region extending along a predetermined axis, and a cladding region provided on an outer periphery of the core region. The core region does not contain any photosensitive dopant which contributes to predetermined wavelength light photosensitivity as a glass property, but a part of the cladding region contain such a photosensitive dopant. By means of this composition, it is possible to form a grating, which has a grating plane slanted by a predetermined angle with respect to the optical axis, in a part of the cladding region surrounding the core region.

The present invention is directed to a gain equalizer having a preferable equalization characteristic and a structure that can be easily fabricated. The gain equalizer flattens a spectrum of light in a predetermined wavelength range inputted through an input terminal and outputs the light from an output terminal, and comprises a coarse-tunable equalizing section and a fine-tunable equalizing section connected in series. The coarse-tunable equalizing section coarsely flattens the spectrum of the light in the predetermined wavelength range, and includes a plurality of filters each having a large loss and a small reflectance as compared with the fine-tunable equalizing section. The fine-tunable equalizing section flattens the spectrum of the light in a wavelength range where the coarse-tunable equalizing section can not flatten at a predetermined value or less among the predetermined wavelength range.

Gain equalizer and optical amplification apparatus

In a method of making a diffraction grating device, an optical waveguide is irradiated, by way of a phase grating mask, with refractive index modulation inducing light so as to form a diffraction grating in the predetermined region. This method comprises (1) a step of measuring a diffraction efficiency distribution of the phase grating mask; and (2) a step of longitudinally scanning the optical waveguide with the refractive index modulation inducing light by way of the phase grating mask and irradiating the optical waveguide with the refractive index modulation inducing light so as to modulate a refractive index of the predetermined region. Upon scanning with the refractive index modulation inducing light, longitudinal relative positions of the phase grating mask and optical waveguide are changed according to the diffraction efficiency distribution of the phase grating mask.
