An oil level sensor for detecting an oil level is arranged in an engine oil pan. The oil level sensor includes a mounting section and a sensing section. An air hole is formed at an upper end of a cover member of the sensing section. The air hole is surrounded by a tubular portion of a shield member attached to a baffle plate of the oil pan. Therefore, any splashed engine oil in the oil pan is restricted from entering the cover member of the sensing section through the air hole. Also, a clearance (&#x3b1;) for venting air is formed between the tubular portion and the baffle plate.

Thus, the compact cylinder head having the collecting exhaust port integrally provided therein can be formed, while avoiding the complication of the structure of a core.

A system for controlling an ignition timing of an internal combustion engine, in which an ignition timing advancing correction amount is determined based on at least the detected engine coolant temperature, and it is determined whether the engine is under a predetermined cold starting condition. When the result is affirmative, the ignition timing is advanced beyond the MBT. This arrangement is based on the inventors finding that the gas temperature rises at the combustion stroke, but drops little after the expansion stroke. With this, the increased fuel amount for compensating the engine output loss caused by ignition timing advancement can effectively be utilized to heat the engine coolant, thereby facilitating and improving the engine warm-up.

An ignition coil has a capacitor for detecting ignition voltage of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine to determine if misfire occurs. The ignition coil has a primary winding and a secondary winding both wound around a core. A connector section, connected to the secondary winding by a lead, is provided for receiving a high-voltage cable to transmit the secondary winding voltage current to an ignition distributor. These components are embedded integrally in an insulator resin at the time of completing the coil. A conductor is also embedded in the insulator resin such that it is located around the connector section keeping a predetermined distance therefrom and sandwiching the insulator resin, whereby a capacitor, which constitutes a capacitive divider in cooperation with a second capacitor for detecting misfire through the ignition voltage, is formed between the connector section and the conductor. A ceramic insulator can be positioned between the conductor and the connector section. The conductor can further be electrically shielded.

A connector disposed at a distal end of a high tension cord having a conductive core therein for carrying an ignition voltage current for igniting air-fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine. A value related to electric resistance across a gap between electrodes of each spark plug is measured. Next, it is determined whether or not the measured value, related to the electric resistance, assumes a value indicating that the electric resistance is below a predetermined value, when the engine is determined to be in a non-combustive state. The spark plug is determined to be abnormal when it is determined that the measured value, related to the electric resistance, assumes the value indicating that the electric resistance is below the predetermined value. A misfire-detecting system for an internal combustion engine compares detected sparking voltage with a first predetermined comparative level and a second predetermined comparative level lower than the first predetermined comparative level. Whether a misfire has occurred in the engine is determined based upon a logical relationship between results of the comparisons. As a result, a misfire can be detected accurately even when dielectric breakdown of the mixture occurs while a misfire has occurred.
