A discharge lamp device is provided that includes a light source device including a reflective surface. In the light source, noble gas not including mercury is excited to provide stable light emission and ozone or the like is prevented from being generated. This discharge lamp device includes airtight container () in which both end sections of a glass bulb are sealed. Airtight container () is filled with a discharge medium mainly including noble gas. One end section of airtight container () includes first electrode (). Airtight container () is externally attached to insulating holder () having a square plate-like shape that includes penetration hole(s) () at one or a plurality of position(s). Holder () is fitted to second electrode () shaped to be a U-like groove so that a fixed interval between airtight container () and second electrode () is maintained. Three side faces () of holder () include protrusion () and second electrode () includes fitting hole () fitted with protrusion (). By fitting protrusion () with fitting hole (), holder () is prevented from disengaged from second electrode ().

A light source device has an internal electrode () disposed at an end portion inside a bulb (), and an external electrode () disposed outside the bulb (). A holder member () holds the external electrode () so as to be opposed to the bulb () with a predetermined spacing (). A dielectric member () is disposed outside the bulb (), at a position corresponding to the internal electrode () so as to be interposed between the bulb () and the external electrode ().

A light source device has a bulb, a discharge medium containing rare gas sealed inside the bulb, an internal electrode disposed inside the bulb, and an external electrode disposed outside the bulb. A method of driving a gas discharge tube is provided. Each field of images is divided into three periods for luminescence-rest, luminescence-preparing, and luminescence steps. During the luminescence-rest step, two voltages whose amplitudes are the same and constant are applied to two sustaining electrodes composing each pair, so that the sustaining electrodes rest the discharge. During the luminescence-preparing step, two voltage pulses whose phases are the same are applied to the two sustaining electrodes composing each pair and a voltage to cause a preparatory discharge is applied to an auxiliary electrode. And during the luminescence step, two voltage pulses whose phases are mutually shifted are applied to the two sustaining electrodes composing each pair, so that the sustaining electrodes cause discharges for the luminescence.
