An apparatus for manufacturing an electrode body includes a coater and an attraction magnet. The coater applies a mixture paste including an electrode active material to a substrate that is configured to be a current collector. The attraction magnet is opposed to an applied layer of the mixture paste formed on the substrate so that when the mixture paste contains a metal object, the attraction magnet attracts the metal object so as to change a shape of a surface of the applied layer.

A method for manufacturing a rechargeable battery includes forming a mixture layer and an insulating layer on an electrode substrate having an edge extending in a specified direction so that an exposed portion where the electrode substrate is exposed extends between the edge and the insulating layer; pressing the mixture layer; and stretching an extension portion, located between the edge and the mixture layer, and the insulating layer in the specified direction. The stretching includes applying a stress greater than or equal to yield stress of the electrode substrate or greater than or equal to 0.2% proof stress of the electrode substrate and less than tensile strength of the electrode substrate to the extension portion, and applying a stress greater than or equal to yield stress of the insulating layer or greater than or equal to 0.2% proof stress of the insulating layer to the insulating layer.

In a cutting process, a laser beam is irradiated to a laser irradiation target portion of a strip-shaped separator layer-coated electrode from a front-side separator layer side to cut a strip-shaped separator layer-coated electrode. Prior to the cutting process, a preheating process is conducted to preheat the front-side separator layer in the laser irradiation target portion.

An electrode includes: a current collector that is made of a conductive material; a mixture layer that contains an active material and is arranged on one surface of the current collector; a thermoplastic resin particle layer in which a plurality of insulating thermoplastic resin particles are arranged on the mixture layer; and a porous inorganic oxide particle layer that contains plural insulating inorganic oxide particles and is arranged on an edge surface of a laminate including the current collector, the mixture layer, and the thermoplastic resin particle layer. A melting point of the inorganic oxide particles is higher than a melting point of the thermoplastic resin particles.

An electrode body comprising a positive electrode mixture layer, a negative electrode mixture layer, and a thermoplastic-resin separator layer interposed therebetween is manufactured. A manufacturing method of the electrode body includes a preprocessing step of preprocessing a portion to be cut in a long-strip shaped integrated structure in which the separator layer as an accumulated layer of resin particles are interposed at least between the positive and negative electrode mixture layers such that the positive electrode mixture layer, the negative electrode mixture layer, and the separator layer are lowered their volume porosities to 10 to 20%, 10 to 20%, and 5% or less, respectively, and a cutting step of cutting the portion of the long-strip shaped integrated structure having been lowered the volume porosity by a cutting blade.
