The invention provides an antibacterial polymeric molded product containing an anionic compound capable of combining, by ionic bond, with a cationic component of a water-soluble antibacterial agent, wherein the cationic component is combined with the anionic compound by ionic bond at least at the surface of the molded product.

Since an inorganic and/or organic antibacterial agent and a hydrophilic substance are used in combination in this invention to produce an antibacterial composition, the intrinsic antibacterial activity of the inorganic or organic antibacterial agent is markedly increased, so that the antibacterial agent used even in a low concentration shows a high antibacterial activity. High antibacterial moldings can be obtained at a relatively low cost by laminating the antibacterial composition of the invention on an inorganic or organic substrate.

The present invention relates to an organic solvent-soluble mucopolysaccharide consisting of an ionic complex of at least one mucopolysaccharide (preferably heparin or heparin derivative) and a quaternary phosphonium, an antibacterial antithrombogenic composition comprising said organic solvent-soluble mucopolysaccharide and an organic polymer material, an antibacterial antithrombogenic composition comprising said organic solvent-soluble mucopolysaccharide and an antibacterial agent (preferably inorganic antibacterial agent such as silver zeolite), and to a medical material comprising said organic solvent-soluble mucopolysaccharide. The organic solvent-soluble mucopolysaccharide, and the antibacterial antithrombogenic composition and medical material containing the same, of the present invention, can easily impart antithrombogenicity and antibacterial property to a polymer to be a base material, which properties being maintained not only immediately after preparation of the material but also after long-term elution. Thus, the organic solvent-soluble mucopolysaccharide and antibacterial antithrombogenic material of the present invention show superior applicability as a material to impart antithrombogenicity and antibacterial ability to medical materials.

A material compatible with blood obtained by heparinizing a polymer having quarternary ammonium groups with an alkali metal salt or an alkaline earth metal salt of heparin or the analog by ion exchange is provided. The equivalent ratio (M/S) of alkali metal atoms or alkaline earth metal atoms (M) in the heparin or the analog bonded to the polymer to sulfur atoms (S) in heparin or the analog bonded to the polymer is 0.4 or less.

A gas-permeable material with excellent compatibility with blood comprising polyurethane, polyurethaneurea, or the derivatives thereof is provided. The polyurethane or polyurethaneurea is obtained from a composition that comprises diisocyanate; polysiloxane containing terminal hydroxyl groups; and polyol or polyamine containing at least one tertiary amino gorup. The derivatives of the polyurethane or polyurethaneurea is obtained by the following steps of: converting the tertiary amino groups contained in the polyurethane or the polyurethaneurea to quarternary ammonium groups, and treating the polyurethane or the polyurethaneurea having quarternary ammonium groups with heparin.

A polyvinyl chloride composition comprising 100 parts by weight of a polyvinyl chloride and 5 to 150 parts by weight of a high molecular weight, modified polyester which is prepared by reacting (A) a polyester having a carboxyl group at terminal thereof and containing an ester unit of total carbon atoms of 8 to 10 in the diol component and the dicarboxylic acid component with (B) a compound having epoxy groups at both terminals thereof, said polyvinyl chloride composition having excellent acticoagulant activity and hence being useful for various blood handling devices including blood transmitting tube, as well as other utilities such as packages for foodstuffs as in the conventional polyvinyl chloride composition.

Devices such as blood transfusion tubes, which can be contacted with human blood at reduced risk of blood clotting, made of a segmented polyether polyurethane urea obtained by chain extending an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer with a diamine having a branch at at least one .alpha.-carbon atom, such as 1,2-propylene diamine or 1,4-cyclohexylene diamine.
