In order to attain high mobility, large on/off current ratio and excellent storage stability to organic transistor comprising an organic semiconductor layer, the organic semiconductor layer comprises at least one compound represented by the general formula (1): (wherein each of Xto Xrepresents independently a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a straight, branched or cyclic alkyl group, a straight, branched or cyclic alkoxy group, a straight, branched or cyclic alkoxyalkyl group, or an unsubstituted or substituted aryl group, A represents an unsubstituted or substituted thiophene ring, B represents an unsubstituted or substituted benzene ring, or an unsubstituted or substituted thiophene ring).

Provided is a naphthalene compound represented by the following Formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each represent a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an alkoxyalkyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms which may be substituted with halogen atoms and have no asymmetric carbon atoms; A represents any of the groups represented by the following formulas: ##STR2## (wherein X.sub.1, X.sub.2, X.sub.3 and X.sub.4 each represent a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom); and z represents 0 or 1. The addition of this naphthalene compound to a liquid crystal composition makes it possible to improve various characteristics such as the high speed response property of the liquid crystal composition and the temperature dependency of the response time. The above naphthalene compound is useful as a liquid crystal material for liquid crystal compositions, particularly ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions.

A method for preparing an aromatic polycarbonate having less content of a low molecular weight oligomer which comprises the steps of: (A) conducting an interfacial polymerization reaction in a reaction system comprising at least one aromatic dihydroxy compound, a carbonate precursor, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal base, water and an organic solvent in the absence of an endcapping agent, and (B) conducting an interfacial polymerization reaction with the addition of an endcapping agent after at least one of the following parameters reaches a predetermined value: (1) a weight-average molecular weight of a prepolymer obtained in step A, (2) a residual amount of the aromatic dihydroxy compound which is contained in the reaction mixture obtained in step A, (3) an amount ratio of a bishaloformate compound to a prepolymer wherein the bishaloformate compound is a bishaloformate derivative of a dihydroxy compound and is contained in the reaction mixture obtained in step A.

Disclosed is a polarizing film comprising a hydrophobic polymer containing a dichroic organic colorant in an oriented state which is characterized in that the dichroic organic colorant is substantially insoluble in water, organic solvents and liquid crystals and the dichroic ratio of the colorant is not less than 7 when it is measured with the film obtained by blending the colorant intimately with polyethylene terephthalate, melting the resulting blend and forming it into a film. This polarizing film has exceptionally excellent moisture resistance and thermal resistance.
