A system for purifying an exhaust gas for use in an automobile is disclosed which does not externally discharge unburnt hydrocarbons until a catalyst becomes active. An adsorbent is provided upstream of the catalyst. A heat exchanger is disposed between an upstream portion of the adsorbent and a portion between the adsorbent and the catalyst for controlling the elevation of the temperature of the adsorbent and for promoting the elevation of the temperature of the catalyst. The unburnt hydrocarbons are absorbed by the adsorbent 4 in the initial period of time from starting of an engine until the catalyst 8 becomes active. Temperature control is made in such a manner that the unburnt hydrocarbons which are adsorbed by the adsorbent 4 begins to be desorbed therefrom substantially simultaneously with the time when the catalyst 8 begins to function. A large quantity of unburnt hydrocarbons which are emitted from an engine immediately after the starting of the engine are prevented from being externally discharged without being treated.

The object of the invention is to provide an engine knocking detection method for detecting a knocking from a plurality of characteristic frequency components indicative of a knocking condition, in which false information indicating a false knock occurrence due to an abnormal drop of the background level to be compared with the characteristic components is eliminated. The engine knocking detection method of the invention includes extracting information indicating an occurrence of a knocking through comparison of the characteristic components and corresponding background levels (step 104) and comparing the background levels and corresponding lower limiters when no knocking is taking place (step 109). A catalyzer control apparatus for purifying exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine has an electrically heated catalyzer that is heated by a battery which battery is isolated from the conventionally provided engine battery. The temperature of the catalyzer is detected by a sensor and a control circuit located with an engine control unit selectively applies power to heat the catalyzer. The catalyzer is arranged to be pre-heated prior to engine start and by isolating the battery for heating the catalyzer from the normally provided engine battery so, because the catalyzer takes a great power, engine starting is enhanced by virtue of having separate batteries.

Before starting the engine, the catalyst is preheated. At the start of the engine, the catalyst preheat control is curtailed according to the state of the batteries. The catalyst current control is performed by detecting the catalyst activation temperature. The catalyst is heated usually to about 350.degree. C., at which point the current supply for heating is terminated.

Apparatus for controlling the electric heating of catalyst

An exhaust gas cleaning system has a catalyzer provided in the exhaust passage of the engine and an adsorbent provided upstream from the catalyzer. The adsorbent temporarily adsorbs unburned hydrocarbons emitted in large amounts immediately after the engine is started. The control unit accordingly controls the air supplying unit.
