An ultraviolet ray emitter includes an inner tube, an outer tube arranged around the inner tube, the outer tube defining between the outer tube and the inner tube, a discharge space where discharge gas is sealed, a pair of electrodes that causes discharge in the discharge space, and an auxiliary light source that assists excitation of discharge gas by emitting light to discharge gas from the outside of the outer tube. The outer tube is less likely to allow passage therethrough of ultraviolet light generated by excitation of discharge gas than the inner tube but allows passage therethrough of light having a wavelength emitted from the auxiliary light source.

Inspection apparatus

Provided are a total organic carbon measurement method and a total organic carbon measurement device capable of determining whether or not an acid has been added to a sample. An acid is introduced into a reaction unit in which the sample is placed from a reservoir in which the acid is reserved (step S). The conductivity of the sample into which the acid has been introduced is measured (step S). The introduction of the acid from the reservoir into the reaction unit is detected on the basis of a change in the conductivity of the sample (step S).

Provided is method of detecting presence or absence of a liquid suctioned by a syringe pump. The method includes, in a following order: a step of detecting a change in electrostatic capacitance between a pair of electrodes provided to a syringe, having a tubular shape in which a piston is moved in an axial direction of the syringe, of a syringe pump; and a step of detecting that liquid suction has been performed by the syringe pump based on the change in the electrostatic capacitance.

A conductivity meter includes a measurement unit including an electrode arranged as being in contact with sample water and a substrate on which a circuit that processes information outputted from the measurement unit is mounted. The measurement unit and the substrate are connected to each other, with a wall portion being interposed, the wall portion partitioning a space in a housing into a water section and an electric section. The measurement unit is arranged on a first surface of the wall portion on a side of the water section such that the electrode is located in an opening provided in the wall portion. The substrate is arranged on a second surface of the wall portion on a side of the electric section such that an electrode contact that electrically connects a power supply and a circuit to each other is located in the opening.

Hence, it is possible to irradiate the sample water with UV light from the excimer lampefficiently.

A total organic carbon measuring device comprises: a sample supply unit that collects and supplies sample water; an oxidative decomposition unit that is connected to the sample supply unit and oxidizes organic matter contained in the sample water supplied from the sample supply unit to carbon dioxide; a carbon dioxide separation unit that transfers carbon dioxide from the sample water that has passed through the oxidative decomposition unit to measurement water consisting of deionized water; a conductivity measuring unit that measures the conductivity of the measurement water flowing from the carbon dioxide separation unit; and an arithmetic processing unit that calculates the TOC concentration of the sample water from a measured value obtained by the conductivity measuring unit. A measured value obtained by the conductivity measuring unit when pure water subjected to aeration treatment is allowed to pass through the oxidative decomposition unit of which oxidative decomposition function is turned off and then flows through a sample water channel is defined as a system blank value.

An air purifier includes a pump that supplies air to an air purifying unit, a filter arranged at an outlet of the air purifying unit, and pipes and that connect these components. The air purifying unit includes an activated carbon tube constituted by a glass tube filled with granular activated carbon, and a soda lime tube constituted by a glass tube filled with granular soda lime. According to a preferred embodiment, three each of the activated carbon tubes and the soda lime tubes are provided, and the activated carbon tubes and the soda lime tubes are connected alternately in series by tubes so that one activated carbon tube is arranged at a most upstream part and one soda lime tube is arranged at a most downstream part.

A method for producing an L-lactic acid with an optical purity of not lower than 70% comprising the steps of:(a) cultivating a microorganism of the genus Bacillus, in particular, Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis, capable of producing an L-lactic acid with an optical purity of not lower than 70% from an assimilable carbon source; and (b) collecting an L-lactic acid with an optical purity of not lower than 70% from the culture.
