A two-dimensional photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser includes an active layer, a two-dimensional photonic crystal, and electrodes. The two-dimensional photonic crystal contains a plate-shaped base material arranged on one side of the active layer and different refractive index portions arranged at lattice points of a predetermined lattice in the base material and having a refractive index different from that of the base material, a band edge frequency for each position in an electric current supply region, which is at least a part of the two-dimensional photonic crystal, is monotonically increased in one direction parallel to the base material. Such a two-dimensional photonic crystal occurs when the different refractive index portion has a refractive index smaller than that of the base material, a filling factor, which is a ratio of a volume occupied by the different refractive index portion in a unit lattice constituting the lattice, is monotonically increased in the one direction.

Two-dimensional photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser

A two-dimensional photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser includes an active layer; and a photonic-crystal layer including a two-dimensional photonic-crystal light-amplification portion that is a first two-dimensional photonic-crystal region provided in a plate-shaped base body disposed on one side of the active layer, and includes an amplification-portion photonic band gap which is a photonic band gap formed between two photonic bands having a band edge at a predetermined point in a reciprocal lattice space, and a two-dimensional photonic-crystal light-reflection portion that is a second two-dimensional photonic-crystal region provided around the two-dimensional photonic-crystal light-amplification portion, and includes a reflection-portion photonic band gap which is a photonic band gap formed between two photonic bands having a band edge at the predetermined point of the reciprocal lattice space, wherein energy ranges of the amplification-portion photonic band gap and the reflection-portion photonic band gap partially overlap and are different.

A thermosensitive recording material comprising a recording layer formed on a substrate and a coating film layer formed thereon, wherein the recording layer is of a bilayer structure composed of a first thermosensitive layer on the side of the lower layer and a second thermosensitive layer on the side of the upper layer and particles are dispersed in at least one of the first and second thermosensitive layers. An original plate for lithographic printing can be produced from a combination of an ink-philic resin and an ink-repelling resin as the compositional materials of such thermosensitive layers. Besides, thermosensitive, recording materials for magnetic recording, thermosensitive materials for electrostatic recording, thermosensitive recording materials for colored image recording and the like, can be generated through a variety of modifications of the compositional materials. Then, the use of such thermosensitive recording materials attains thermosensitive recording at a higher precision through simple processes and procedures.

The present invention discloses an optical material having excellent transparency, impact resistance and heat resistance and having a low specific gravity and a high refractive index comprising a resin obtained by radical polymerization of specific difunctional (meth)acrylate (A) and aromatic vinyl monomer (B) and, if necessary, polymerizable monomer (C) copolymerizable with the ingredients (A), or (B) or by radical polymerization of the ingredients (A), (B) and (C) under the presence of a radical polymerizable or not-radical polymerizable compound having alkoxysilyl group, epoxy group, alcoholic hydroxy group or carboxyl group in the molecule, an optical molding product comprising the optical material, as well as production process therefor. The optical molding product is utilized as for ophthalmic lenses or lenses for various kinds of optical equipments, prisms, optical fibers, optical waveguides and optical discs.

Optical material of low specific gravity and excellent impact

A resin having a low specific gravity, an excellent impact resistance and a high refractive index can be produced by radical polymerization of a polymerizable monomer mixture composed essentially of [I] at least one polymerizable monomer selected from the group consisting of specific polyfunctional (meth)acrylates, [II] at least one polymerizable monomer selected from the group consisting of styrene and alpha-methylstyrene, and [III] at least one polymerizable monomer selected from the group consisting of unsaturated nitriles. This invention provides an optical material composed of said resin, especially, a lens.

Optical material composed of resin having high refractive index

A process for producing a resin having a high refractivve index which comprises radically polymerizing a material monomer, characterized in that said material monomer comprises [I] at least one polymerizable monomer selected from the group consisting of a polyfunctional thioacrylate and a polyfnctional thiomethacrylate (as an indispensable component), and optionally [II] at least one other polymerizable monomer which is radically polymerizable with said polymerizable monomer [I], a resin having a high refractive index produced by said process and optical materials, especially lenses and disk substrates prepared from said resin.

Thiolcarboxylic acid esters represented by the general formula ##STR1## wherein X represents --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, ##STR2## and n and m represent an integer of 1 to 3.
