This invention provides a binder for a fuel cell which has high adhesion, low methanol solubility, high methanol permeability and high proton conductivity, a composition for electrode formation, an electrode for a fuel cell, and a fuel cell using them. The binder is particularly suitable for a binder for a direct methanol type fuel cell which requires high proton conductivity. The binder for a fuel cell comprises a block copolymer which comprises a block having a repeating structural unit of a divalent aromatic group that contains a protonic acid group and a block having a repeating structural unit of a divalent aromatic group that does not contain a protonic acid group, and which has a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 180&#xb0; C. or less. In particular, it is preferable that the block copolymer has an ion exchange group equivalent of from 200 to 1,000 g/mole and a weight retention ratio of 90% or more as measured by immersion in a 64 weight % aqueous methanol solution at 25&#xb0; C. for 24 hours.

There are disclosed, a polyether ketone having a primary particle size of 50 &#x3bc;m or less; and a method of producing a polyether ketone by a desalting polycondensation, which contains a step of conducting a polymerization reaction under a condition of deposition of the polymer. The polyether ketone obtained by the present invention has small particle size, high molecular weight and sufficiently small content of impurities such as alkali metal components.

The present invention relates to an ionically conductive polymeric gel electrolyte for batteries having high ionic conductivity and sufficiently high solid strength. The invention has an object to provide a solid battery which prevents internal short-circuiting even if no diaphragm is used and which has high reliability, by using the ionically conductive polymeric gel electrolyte. Disclosed is an ionically conductive polymeric gel electrolyte, containing at least a polymer matrix, a non-aqueous electrolytic solution and an electrolytic salt, wherein at least one kind of a halogen-substituted carbonic ester is contained as a solvent of the non-aqueous electrolytic solution. Also disclosed is a solid battery having the ionically conductive polymeric gel electrolyte as a constituent.

A process for removing a diol from a cyclic carbonic acid ester containing the diol as an impurity, which comprises bringing a cyclic carbonic acid ester containing a diol as an impurity into contact with a synthetic zeolite in the presence of a chain carbonic acid ester. According to this process, there can be obtained a mixture of a cyclic carbonic acid ester and a chain carbonic acid ester having a very small content of diol, which is suitable as a solvent for electrolytic solution of a condenser, cell or battery.

A non-aqueous electrolytic solutions which has self-distinguishing property, low reactivity to metal lithium and high withstand voltage is provided. The non-aqueous electrolytic solutions of the first invention comprise, as electrolyte, lithium salt preferably LiPF.sub.6 and, as solvent, phosphoric acid esters of the following general formula [1]; ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, which may be the same or different, represent an alkyl group or an alkyl group substituted by one or more halogen atoms and at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 represents an alkyl group substituted by one or more halogen atoms. The non-aqueous electrolytic solutions of the second invention comprise, as solvents for electrolyte, trimethyl phosphate, one or more linear carbonates represented by the following general formula [3]; ##STR2## (wherein R.sup.6 represents methyl or ethyl group and R.sup.7 represents a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms) and one or more cyclic carbonates and, as electrolyte, LiPF.sub.6 ; wherein content of the trymetyl phosphate is 1 to 10% by volume of the solvents for electrolyte. The non-aqueous electrolytic solution is suitable for a cell using carbon material capable of being doped and dedoped with lithium ions as a negative electrode active material and complexed oxide of lithium and a transition metal as a positive electrode active material.
