A glass roll includes a glass film formed by a downdraw method. The glass film is wound into a roll using a winding roller in a state in which front and back glass surfaces of the glass film formed in the forming operation are exposed, and during the winding operation, the glass film is superposed on a separable protective sheet. The protective sheet extends beyond both sides in a width direction of the glass film. The protective sheet can further be wound on an outer peripheral surface of the glass film by winding only the protective sheet from a trailing end of the glass film in a winding direction of the glass film.

A glass roll reliably prevents a glass film from breaking from an end surface of the glass film as an origin of breakage. The glass roll is formed by winding the glass film into a roll while superposing the glass film on a protective sheet. The glass film is formed by an overflow downdraw method to have a thickness of 1 &#x3bc;m or more and 200 &#x3bc;m or less, and has each end surface in a width direction formed as a cut surface cut by laser splitting.

A glass film laminate includes a supporting glass and a glass film peelably laminated to the supporting glass. A contacting surface of the glass film and a contacting surface of the supporting glass directly contact each other without an adhesive therebetween. The contacting surface of the supporting glass includes a first region and a second region with a surface roughness smaller than a surface roughness of the first region. An adhesive force between the supporting glass and the glass film is greater at the second region than at the first region.

A glass for a display substrate composed of 50 to 70% SiO, 10 to 25% AlO, 8.4 to 20% BO, 0 to 10% MgO, 6 to 15% CaO, 0 to 10% BaO, 0 to 10% SrO, 0 to 10% ZnO, 0 to 5% TiO, 0 to 5% PO, 0.01 to 0.2% alkali metal, and from 0.01% to less than 0.4% ZrO, as expressed in % by mass. The glass can have a &#x3b2;-OH value of 0.20/mm or more and an area of 0.1 mor more. The glass is produced by mixing raw materials to provide the SiO, AlO, BO, MgO, CaO, BaO, SrO, ZnO, TiO, POand alkali metal contents, electrically melting the raw materials in a melting furnace constructed of a high zirconia refractory; and refining, homogenizing and forming the glass melt.

Thus, the glass film is reliably prevented from breaking due to static fatigue, and is able to be stored for long periods. A situation where glass chip produced as a result of breakage of waste glass sheets floats in a cutting chamber when the waste glass sheets produced in glass sheet producing steps are collected is suppressed. Provided is a glass sheet production installation (), in which a sheetshaped glass ribbon (B) is formed by supplying molten glass (A) into a forming body () and causing the molten glass (A) to flow downward on a conveyance path extending in an upper and lower direction from the forming body (), and the glass ribbon (B) is cut into a predetermined dimension in a cutting chamber () provided on the conveyance path so that glass substrates (C) are produced. The glass sheet production installation () is provided with a drop hole () provided in a floor surface of the cutting chamber () and a collection chamber () provided under the cutting chamber () and is configured so as to collect waste glass substrates of the glass substrates (C) by dropping the waste glass substrates through a drop hole () into the collection chamber (), the glass substrates (C) being obtained by cutting.

Glass for display substrate

An alkali-free glass substrate containing, by mass percent, 50-70% of SiO, 10-25% of AlO, 5-20% of BO, 0-10% of MgO, 0-15% of CaO, 0-10% of BaO, 0-10% of SrO and 0-5% of ZnO, also containing SnOand/or SbOand having a &#x3b2;-OH value of at least 0.485/mm.

Alkali-free glass substrate

A molten glass supply device is provided, which can solve unavoidable problems for high viscosity characteristics in connection with the conventional molten glass supply device for high viscosity glass. Such problems include improperly high heating cost caused by excessive heat radiation in a melting furnace, reduction in the grade of products deriving from an excess amount of an erosion foreign material and reduction in the product yield. High viscosity molten glass having a property in which a temperature at which the molten glass exhibits a viscosity of 1000 poise is 1350&#xb0; C. or higher is supplied to a forming device through a melting furnace, a distribution portion in communication with the outlet of the melting furnace, and a plurality of branch paths branching from the distribution portion. In the branch paths, distribution resistance providing portions that provide distribution resistance to molten glass passed through the branch paths are provided. The supply pressure of the molten glass is equalized when molten glass is distributed from the distribution portion to the branch paths. The distribution portion has a shallower bottom than the melting furnace.
