A system operable to communicate time-division multiplexed information and asynchronous transfer mode cells includes a primary rate switching fabric operable to receive a first plurality of transport signals and to switch the first plurality of transport signals at a first level, a sub-rate switching fabric operable to receive a second plurality of transport signals carrying time-division multiplexed information and to switch the second plurality of transport signals at second level that is a more granular level than the first level, and an asynchronous transfer mode switching fabric operable to receive a third plurality of transport signals carrying asynchronous transfer mode cells, and to switch asynchronous transfer mode cells among the third plurality of transport signals carrying asynchronous transfer mode cells.

Switching complex architecture and operation

Data such as STS, DS1, a LAN packet, etc. are converted into STS signals. The STS signals are classified into a signal which is switched by an STS switching module at an STS level, a signal which is switched by a VT switching module and an ATM switching module, and a signal which includes ATM cells. An operator presets whichever STS signal is transmitted to the VT switching module or the ATM switching module, by using a centralized control module, based on network knowledge.

Synchronous communications network transmission device having a switching capability of an asynchronous communications network

A telecommunications switching apparatus ( ) includes optical paths ( ) coupled to interface cards ( ), which in turn are coupled to a switching circuit ( ). The switching circuit is coupled to a plurality of universal connectors ( ), each of which is coupled to an auxiliary connector ( ). The universal connectors can each removably receive any one of several types of switching circuit cards ( ), which each utilize a respective one of several different communication protocols. An auxiliary circuit card ( ) may be provided in the associated auxiliary connector, in order to support switching circuit cards that use certain communication protocols. The optically transmitted information includes segments formatted according to respective communication protocols, and is converted from optical to electrical form by the interface cards. The switching circuit then routes each segment to a respective universal connector containing a switching circuit card that effects switching according to the communication protocol of that segment.

Method and apparatus for switching signals of multiple different communication protocols

A hybrid protection circuit (,) operatively couples a plurality of communication paths in ingress cables (,) to a plurality of communication paths in egress cables (,). A line selector (,) effects protection switching of communication paths in one cable relative to communication paths in another cable, producing an output which is supplied to each of two switching sections (,). The switching sections respectively effect switching according to a synchronous transport mode (STM) protocol, and an asynchronous transport mode (ATM) protocol. A multiplexer (,) selectively combines signals from the two switching sections, and supplies the result to a bridge circuit (,), which performs protection switching of these signals relative to communication paths in the respective egress cables (,). The hybrid protection circuit can be electrically configured to conform to one of various industry-standard protection techniques, including bidirectional line-switched ring (BLSR) protection, unidirectional path-switched ring (UPSR) protection, and one-plus-one (1&plus;1) line protection.
