An image reading device includes a document tray, a linear conveyance path, a curved conveyance path, a document conveyance device, a scanning device, a length detecting device, an operation device, and a controller. A plurality of conveyance rollers are disposed at a predetermined first interval in the linear conveyance path. In the curved conveyance path, a plurality of conveyance rollers are disposed at a predetermined second interval longer than the first interval. When accepting through the operation device an instruction for conveying an original document through the curved conveyance path, the controller allows conveyance of the original document through the curved conveyance path when a length of the original document detected by the length detecting device is not shorter than the second interval or disallows conveyance of the original document through the curved conveyance path when the detected length of the original document is shorter than the second interval.

Conveyance modes include a registration mode accompanied with skew correction and a registrationless mode unaccompanied with skew correction. When a jam occurs, the controller interrupts a job, and invokes blank-feed processing starting from a state with all sheets re-set. On invoking blank-feed processing, the controller checks the conveyance mode and recognizes the number of jams. If the conveyance mode is the registration mode and in addition the number of jams has not reached a threshold number of jams, the controller invokes blank-feed processing in the registrationless mode.

The present invention provides a method for preparing a glycoside of a flavonoid compound, which comprises the step of treating flavonoid and a glycosyl donor with an enzymatic agent having glycosylation activity and being derived from the genus(preferablyor). Such a flavonoid compound includes a catechin compound or a methylated derivative thereof, and the glycosyl donor includes a carbohydrate containing a maltotriose residue (preferably maltotriose, maltotetraose, maltopentaose, maltohexaose, maltoheptaose, dextrin, &#x3b3;-cyclodextrin or soluble starch). Glycosides obtained by the present invention have higher water solubility, improved taste, and increased stability. The present invention also provides novel glycosides of catechin compounds, which are obtained by the method of the present invention.

The present invention provides a novel lipase with a molecular weight of about 32 kDa, which is produced by a strain belonging to the genus, as well as a gene encoding the same. The present invention provides a novel ascorbic acid derivative as a provitamin C with improved stability in the body and prolonged life in the body compared to conventionally known 2-O-(&#x3b1;-D-glucopyranosyl)ascorbic acid. The composition comprising the novel compound 2-O-(&#x3b2;-D-glucopyranosyl)ascorbic acid has been extracted from plants such as from NingxiaL. and/orMill. The compositions comprising 2-O-(&#x3b2;-D-glucopyranosyl)ascorbic acid may be enzymatically synthesized using &#x3b2;-D-glucosyltransferase. Pure 2-O-(&#x3b2;-D-glucopyranosyl)ascorbic acid may be produced from such compositions. Alternatively, 2-O-(&#x3b2;-D-glucopyranosyl)ascorbic acid may be produced by chemical synthesis. The 2-O-(&#x3b2;-D-glucopyranosyl)ascorbic acid results in higher stability and a prolonged life of vitamin C when ingested in the body compared to the corresponding &#x3b1;-D-glucopyranosyl derivative, and is therefore highly suitable as a provitamin C to be used in cosmetics and foods.
