A failure detection apparatus includes: an output portion that outputs from an audio output device a confirmation signal having a frequency in a band other than the audible band; an input portion to which an input signal is inputted from an audio input device; and a failure detection portion that detects whether the audio output device and the audio input device are operating normally on the basis of the confirmation signal and the input signal.

A portable terminal (e.g., portable telephone) is constituted using a geomagnetic sensor for detecting an azimuth, and a GPS receiver for detecting a present position thereof. A direction of a prescribed place (e.g., Mecca) is calculated based on the azimuth information and position information, so that the calculated direction is indicated by an arrow displayed on the screen of a display. In addition, a prescribed message is displayed on the screen of the display, or it is produced as preset vocalized sounds by a speaker. The azimuth information and position information are automatically produced at each religious service time, at which a user, especially a muslim who pray, holds a religious service in the direction of Mecca. In addition, the portable terminal can detect a direction match between the direction designated by the prescribed portion (e.g., antenna) of the portable terminal body and the direction of Mecca.

A music apparatus utilizes a tone generator including a plurality of tone generating elements to generate a plurality of music tones arranged in a set of performance parts of a music piece based on sequence data. An assigning section assigns the plurality of tone generating elements to the set of the performance parts. A sequencer processes the sequence data to sequentially provide parameters for use in the tone generating elements. A register is divided into a first area for storing first parameters to be applied individually by each of two or more tone generating elements and a second area for storing a second parameter to be applied commonly by two or more tone generating elements. Each tone generating element uses both of the stored first parameter and second parameter corresponding to the tone generating element.

A sound apparatus is constructed for directing a sound image of a virtual sound source at a designated source point to a listener in a virtual sound field. In the sound apparatus, a database provisionally memorizes acoustic transfer characteristics of the virtual sound field in correspondence to reference source points distributed radially around a center point of the listener. Left and right filters respectively filter audio signals of left and right channels according to the acoustic transfer characteristics loaded from the database. A processor computes a leftward acoustic direction from the designated source point to a left ear of the listener, and computes a rightward acoustic direction from the designated source point to a right ear of the listener. A controller specifies a leftward reference source point coincident with the leftward acoustic direction to load an effective acoustic transfer characteristic corresponding to the leftward reference source point from the database into the left filter, and specifies a rightward reference source point coincident with the rightward acoustic direction to load another effective acoustic transfer characteristic corresponding to the rightward reference source point from the database into the right filter. A feeder feeds an audio signal of the left channel to the left filter and feeds another audio signal of the right channel to the right filter to thereby direct the sound image of the virtual sound source located at the source point to the listener positioned at the center point.

In a case where tone waveform sample data are to be arithmetically formed by software, there are installed, within a virtual device driver routine of an operating system, a MIDI processing routine for converting a received MIDI event into tone generator control data and a waveform forming processing routine for arithmetically forming tone waveform sample data for one frame. The MIDI processing routine is triggered by a software interrupt signal that is generated in response to a MIDI event produced from an application software program such as a sequencer software program, and the waveform forming processing routine is triggered by a hardware interrupt signal that is generated upon completion of tone reproduction for one frame.

A musical tone waveform sample is generated at each sampling time by the use of a processing unit carrying out an arithmetic operation every repetition period that is longer than the sampling time. An envelope characteristic of a waveform of a musical tone to be generated is approximated by a polygonal line formed by a plurality of segments each of which has a length corresponding to the repetition period. An envelope value of a first waveform sample of waveform data of the musical tone to be generated for the repetition period is determined. The envelope value of the first waveform sample is multiplied by a predetermined attenuation factor to obtain an envelope value of a last waveform sample of the waveform data for the repetition period. Each of the segments of the polygonal line is determined by the envelope value of the first waveform sample and the envelope value of the last waveform sample. A difference between the envelope values of the first and last waveform samples is calculated. A decremental or incremental value per the each sampling time is obtained based on the difference. The envelope value of the waveform at the each sampling time is determined by adding the decremental or incremental value to an immediately preceding value of the envelope value of the waveform.
