Disclosed is an acrylic syrup containing a vinyl monomer (A) of methyl methacrylate and a polymerized solid component (B) which is a high polymer of said vinyl monomer and has a weight average molecular weight of from 30,000 to 2,000,000 as measured by the GPC and a viscosity at 25&#xb0; C. of from 0.1 to 50 Pa&#xb7;s, wherein at least part of said polymerized solid component (B) is a grafted rubber obtained by graft-polymerizing said vinyl monomer with a rubbery polymer, and said grafted rubber has a large branching coefficient. The acrylic resin molded articles obtained from the acrylic syrup exhibit excellent impact resistance.

The invention provides a thermoplastic resin composition which is excellent in transparency, heat resistance, resistance to chemicals, and mechanical strength as well as moldability, printability, etc. The thermoplastic resin composition containing a polycarbonate resin in an amount of 2 to 99.5 wt. % and a polyester resin in an amount of 98 to 0.5 wt. %, wherein the polyester resin (B) contains diol units each having a cyclic acetal skeleton in an amount of 20 to 60 mol % with respect to total diol structural units.

A process for the preparation of a powder coating composition, wherein 5-90% by weight of at least one monomeric compound selected from glycidyl group-containing unsaturated compounds and methylglycidyl group-containing unsaturated compounds is copolymerized with 95-10% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer in methanol to obtain a resin solution. The resin solution is spray-dried to obtain a powdery resin. Alternatively, the resin solution is fed to an extruder having a die and a plurality of vent ports and extruded through the die, while removing volatile matters through the vent ports, to obtain extrudates. The extrudates are pulverized to obtain a powdery resin.

There is disclosed A polyester based resin composition (D) which comprises a polyamide resin (A) and a polyester resin (B), or a polyamide resin (A), a polyester resin (B) and a polyethylene terephthalate resin (C), characterized in that the polyester resin (B) is obtained by polycondensation of a dicarboxylic acid component containing 0.5 to 60 mol % of a dicarboxylic acid having a cyclic acetal skeleton and/or a diol component containing 0.5 to 60 mol % of a diol having a cyclic acetal skeleton, and that the blending proportions of the polyamide resin (A), the polyester resin (B) and the polyethylene terephthalate resin (C) are each in the range of 1 to 99% by weight, 1 to 99% by weight and 0 to 98% by weight, respectively on the basis of total sum weight of the components (A), (B) and (C). There is further disclosed a molded product (film, sheet, thin wall hollow container, etc.). The above polyester based resin composition and a product molded therefrom are each excellent in transparency color tone, gas barrier properties, pinhole resistance and mechanical performance.

A methyl methacrylate syrup is produced by the steps of (1) preparing a starting material comprising methyl methacrylate or a monomer mixture mainly comprising methyl methacrylate, and dividing the starting material into 20 to 70% by weight of an initial charge and 30 to 80% by weight of an after-charge; (2) heating the initial charge in a reactor; (3) adding a whole protion of a chain transfer agent at the time when the initial charge reaches a reaction temperature; (4) adding the after-charge over 0.1 to 10 hours together with a polymerization initiator having a half-life of 10 to 300 seconds at the reaction temperature; (5) continuing the heating after the addition of the after-charge and the polymerization initiator is complete; and (6) adding a hindered phenol polymerization inhibitor at the time the heating is finished. The methyl methacrylate syrup thus produced is excellent in storage stability.

A high quality copolymer of styrene and methyl methacrylate is economically produced by polymerizing styrene and methyl methacrylate in a homogeneous solution of raw materials comprising methyl methacrylate, styrene, and an antioxidant, while the solution of raw materials is continuously supplied to a polymerization reactor including at least one complete-mixing type reaction tank, continuously removing the polymerization product from the polymerization reactor, supplying the polymerization product removed from the polymerization reactor directly to an extruder having a plurality of vents, and extruding a copolymer from the extruder, while volatile matter are removed through the plurality of vents.

A process for continuously preparing a high quality methacrylic polymer with a high productivity is provided. The process comprises continuously polymerizing methyl methacrylate alone or a monomer mixture of methyl methacrylate and an alkyl acrylate by a solution polymerization using methanol as a solvent, directly feeding the resulting polymerization reaction product to an extruder having a plurality of vents, and extruding the polymer, while volatiles are removed through the vents.

There is disclosed a process for producing a glycidyl ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid which comprises the steps of neutralizing acrylic acid or methacrylic acid with a carbonate or a bicarbonate of an alkali metal in an excess amount of epichlorohydrin while an oxygen-containing gas is blown into the liquid reaction system; subjecting water formed by the neutralization and epichlorohydrin to azeotropic distillation to discharge them outside the reaction system and to form an alkali metal salt of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid; adding a quaternary ammonium salt as a catalyst to the reaction system to react the alkali metal salt of the acid with the epichlorohydrin and thus synthesize the glycidyl ester of the acid; cooling the liquid reaction product while recovering part of the excess epichlorohydrin under reduced pressure; adding aqueous solution of an alkali hydroxide to the liquid reaction product to separate into aqueous layer and organic layer; adding a catalyst deactivator to the organic phase; and subsequently distilling the organic layer to separate the glycidyl ester of the acid while blowing an oxygen-containing gas into the organic layer. The above process makes it possible to efficiently produce a highly pure glycidyl ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in high yield with minimized contents of impurities.

Process for producing glycidyl ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid

A process is provided for preparing a high-quality methyl methacrylate polymer by polymerizing a monomer comprising methyl methacrylate as a main component in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, a chain transfer agent, and 5 to less than 10 wt. % methanol. The polymerization is carried out in a uniform solution. According to this process, a methyl methacrylate polymer is obtained which reduces the generation of silver streaks, voids, coloring, odor and the like at the time of thermal molding.

Process for preparing methyl methacrylate polymer

A process for purifying a polymer by separating and removing volatile components from a polymer composition containing the volatile components, which comprises: (a) heating the polymer composition containing a methanol solvent to a temperature of 120.degree. to 240.degree. C. by a heater, wherein an internal pressure the heater is maintained at 8 to 35 kg/cm.sup.2 G; (b) discharging the heated polymer composition into a tank in which pressure is maintained at -0.7 to 1.0 kg/cm.sup.2 G, and then separating and collecting most of the volatile components to lower the concentration of the solvent in the remaining volatile components in the polymer composition to 0.5% by weight or less; and (c) feeding the resultant polymer composition to a vent extruder maintained such that a barrel temperature at an inner side thereof is 160.degree. to 280.degree. C. and pressure in a vent portion is 5 to 400 Torr, and then extruding the polymer composition to lower the content of the remaining volatile components in the composition to 1% by weight or less. Alternatively, between the above-mentioned steps (b) and (c), there can be interposed a step (b') of introducing an inert gas into the polymer composition before heating or during heating, or in the vicinity of the polymer composition which is being discharged into the tank. By using this process, a polymer can easily be separated and purified, so that a high-quality polymer, particularly a methyl methacrylate polymer, can be efficiently manufactured, without polymer discoloration.

Process for purifying polymer

A process is provided for preparing a high-quality methyl methacrylate polymer by polymerizing a monomer comprising methyl methacrylate as a main component in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, a chain transfer agent, and a small amount of methanol as a solvent. The polymerization is carried out in a uniform solution at a temperature of 90.degree. to 180.degree. C. so that a monomer conversion of 40 to 90 mol % is attained. According to this process, a methyl methacrylate polymer is obtained which reduces the generation of silver streaks, voids, coloring, odor and the like at the time of thermal molding.
