A cartridge case for containing a disk-shaped recording medium has a shutter attached slidably thereon. The shutter is U-shaped sectionally and the edge sections where the shutter contacts the surface of the cartridge case are rounded so that friction therebetween is reduced when the shutter slides on the surface of the cartridge case. The cartridge case is provided with a notch and an indentation on at least one of its side surfaces corresponding to protruding pieces in the device into which the cartridge case is inserted such that a sensor in the device can be activated only when a cartridge case compatible with the device is inserted and these protruding pieces properly engage with the notch and the indentation on the cartridge case.

Cartridge case

A magneto-optical disk device for receiving a magneto-optical disk housed in a cassette and for driving the magneto-optical disk by a disk drive motor to read/write the disk is disclosed. The device includes a movable cassette carrier having a top plate for receiving the cassette therein, a read/write head located under the cassette carrier, a magnetic field coil slidably mounted on the top plate above the read/write head to move in a direction parallel to the movement of the read/write head, a pole extending substantially perpendicular from the read/write head at a position offset from the cassette carrier, and an arm having one end slidably mounted on the pole and other end fixedly connected to the magnetic field coil. The arm is mounted to slide along the pole to move the magnetic field coil along a direction substantially perpendicular to the disk.

A linear motor is movably disposed in a disc unit internally provided with a cartidge holder for loading and ejecting a disc cartridge and is securely locked by a locking mechanism at the time of ejection of the cartridge. The locking mechanism comprises a first locking member extending downwards from the cartridge holder and a second locking member securely mounted on the linear motor. When the disc cartridge is ejected by the cartridge holder, the first locking member is brought into contact with the second locking member to move the linear motor toward a location at which the linear motor is securely locked.

A disc clamping device comprises a disc base on which to set a disc and which has a spindle for rotating the disc, and a disc holding member movable in the axial direction of the spindle. The disc holding member comprises a portion for pressing a disc with a centering hub and a portion to be engaged with the center hole of a disc with no centering hub.

A handwritten character recognition device comprises a feature point circuit for recognizing a character with using three feature points for a continuous stroke connecting a first stroke and second strokes. For recognition, both stroke information and stroke connection information between adjacent strokes are read-in per stroke. Therefore, the character can be recognized with a relative position correlation between the stroke number and the stroke shape. Even if the stroke number may be irregularly changed, the inputted character can be recognized without a necessity of storing information for the irregularly changed strokes.

An optical bar code reader includes a recognition system for recognizing a bar code data even when none of a plurality of scanning beams extend over the entire width of a bar code label. A plurality of incomplete data each of which represents a portion of the bar code label are combined with each other by a composition circuit to get an estimated complete bar code data. A determination system is provided for detecting whether the read out data obtained from any scanning beam corresponds to the entire bar code data. If an affirmative answer is obtained by the determination system, such read out data is directly applied to the associated processing system without activating the composition circuit.
