In a pulley arrangement of a belt-type continuously variable transmission, a ring member (6) integrated with a first cylinder member (3) is coupled to a second cylinder member (5) using splines (6d and 5c) to limit mutual movements of the first and second cylinder members and using snap ring (7) to limit the axial displacement therebetween in peripheral directions of the respective first and second cylinder members. The first cylinder member is slidably contacted on an outer peripheral surface of a hollow cylindrical portion of a second conical pulley component. The second cylinder member is fixed onto an outer peripheral surface of a shaft portion of a first conical pulley component. In addition, a another stopper is provided between an outer peripheral end of the hollow cylindrical portion (56d) and an inner peripheral surface of the second piston member (8) for limiting mutual movements of the second piston member and the hollow cylindrical portion in the peripheral directions of the second piston member and the hollow cylindrical portion.

Oxygen sensor element (ZrO.sub.2 solid electrolyte etc) for detecting oxygen concentration in an exhaust gas has a protective layer which is made of a heat-resistant metal oxide and which carries a component of a IIa subgroup element (Ca, Mg etc) on the side exposed to the exhaust gas of the sensor element, at least a part of the protective layer being present as a nonstoichiometric compound (Ti oxide etc) with respect to the heat-resistant metal oxide. Si-poisoning is prevented. Heater for heating the sensor element is provided for preventing Si-poisoning at low temperatures.

A continuously variable transmission includes a main shaft having a stepped portion in the vicinity of an end thereof, stationary and movable flanges, and a stopper for preventing a movement of the movable flange. An oxygen sensor element comprises a reference-gas-side electrode on one surface of a solid electrolyte having oxygen-ion conductivity, a detection-gas-side electrode on another surface, and a porous coated layer formed of a heat-resistant metal oxide formed on the surface of the detection-gas-side electrode, wherein at least a part of said coated layer is formed of a nonstoichiometric compound of transition metal (Ti, Co, Ni) oxide, and a portion formed of said nonstoichiometric compound carries a catalyst for equilibrating gas components of a detection gas. The catalyst (Pt, Rh) is 0.2-5 mole % relative to the portion formed of said nonstoichiometric compound. The coated layer may be thickened at the distal end portion.

Oxygen-sensor element comprises reference-gas-side and detection-gas-side electrodes on both surfaces of a solid-electrolyte body, and a porous protective layer on the surface of the detection-gas-side electrode, wherein at least a part (including at least a surface layer) of said porous protective layer is formed by a granular texture of a grain size of 0.1 to 0.5 .mu.m formed mainly of a nonstoichiometric compound of a transition metal oxide (TiO.sub.x), and a catalyst for having gas components of the gas to be measured react is carried in at least a part (including at least a surface layer) of the porous protective layer. Oxidation reaction of gas components is improved to prevent deterioration of the responsive property.

Oxygen-sensor element

A pulley device includes a moveable conical pulley component which is moveable to a stationary conical pulley component by a servo motor. The servo motor includes a cylinder fixedly held with respect to a shaft portion of the stationary conical pulley component, and a piston fixed to the moveable conical pulley component and slidably engaging the cylinder. The servo motor also includes an auxiliary cylinder reduced in diameter than the cylinder and fixed with respect to the shaft portion, and an auxiliary piston fixed to the moveable conical pulley component. The auxiliary piston is received in the auxiliary cylinder.

Oxygen sensor for air-fuel ratio control is provided with a sensor element having an oxygen ion-conductive main body and electrodes on both sides thereof, and at least one porous protective layer covering the electrode on the exhaust gas side. The protective layer includes an oxygen storage component OSC without copresence of a noble metal catalyst. The protective layer is intermeshingly connected to the main body via spherical protrusions of the main body. Double-layered protective layer structure includes OSC noncontaining layer (optionally containing catalyst) and OSC containing layer, as inner and outer protective layer or vice versa. OSC containing layer is formed by impregnation with OSC-solution through immersing the respective porous protective layer, or by cosintering the OSC containing green coating layer. By impregnation 0.2-8 wt %, or by cosintering 0.2-30 wt %, of OSC metal element is containable. The outer protective layer is thinner and more porous than the inner protective layer. Any of the protective layers can be formed by flame spraying.

Oxygen sensor for air-fuel ratio control is provided with a sensor element having an oxygen ion-conductive main body and electrodes on both sides thereof, and at least one porous protective layer covering the electrode on the exhaust gas side. The protective layer includes an oxygen storage component OSC without copresence of a noble metal catalyst. The protective layer is intermeshingly connected to the main body via spherical protrusions of the main body. Double-layered protective layer structure includes OSC noncontaining layer (optionally containing catalyst) and OSC containing layer, as inner and outer protective layer or vice versa. Oxygen sensor for air-fuel ratio control having a protective layer

A device for detecting the concentration of oxygen in an automotive exhaust gas, particularly, an automotive exhaust gas containing lead, providing reliable operation for long operating periods. The device includes an oxygen-ion-conductive solid electrolyte positioned between the atmosphere and the gas to be measured, and electrodes made of an electroconductive material, one of which is located on the surface of the solid electrolyte contacted by the atmosphere and the other on the surface of the electrolyte contacted by the exhaust gas. The surface of the electrode in contact with the exhaust gas is coated with a protective, heat-resistive metal oxide layer having supported thereon a uniform layer of a lead-trapping thermally stable metal in a molar amount of 0.4% of the metal oxide.

A method of manufacturing an oxygen sensor composed of oxygen ion transmissible solid electrolyte which is operative to detect an oxygen concentration in exhaust gas delivered from an internal combustion engine for the purpose of controlling a ratio of air to fuel in a mixed gas to be supplied to the combustion engine and which comprises successive steps of adhering to the outer surface of the solid electrolyte an outside electrode having a thickness of at least 0.5.mu. by thin film techniques, heat treating the outside electrode and providing on the outside electrode a number of holes or broken holes whose diameter or width is larger than the thickness of the outside electrode, adhering to the inner surface of the solid electrolyte a porous inside electrode by thin film technique or suspension coating process, and heat treating the inside electrode at a temperature lower than the temperature at which metals constituting the inside electrode begin to be sintered.
