An apparatus for generating hydrogen gas in which hydrogen gas of a high purity is supplied to a hydrogen-utilizing device by using a decahydronaphthalene/naphthalene reaction. The apparatus includes a storage tank in which decahydronaphthalene is stored as a crude fuel, a reaction tank which has a catalyst and a heater for heating the catalyst and which causes dehydrogenation of decahydronaphthalene supplied from the storage tank to the heated catalyst, and a separation tank in which hydrogen-rich gas is separated out from naphthalene and hydrogen gas supplied from the reaction tank by using a hydrogen separation film and from which the separated hydrogen gas is discharged.

The gas storage method comprises a step of keeping a gas to be stored and an adsorbent in a vessel at a low temperature below the liquefaction temperature of the gas to be stored so that the gas to be stored is adsorbed onto the adsorbent in a liquefied state, a step of introducing into the vessel kept at the low temperature a gaseous or liquid medium with a freezing temperature that is higher than the above-mentioned liquefaction temperature of the gas to be stored, for freezing of the medium, so that the gas to be stored which has been adsorbed onto the adsorbent in a liquefied state is encapsulated by the medium which has been frozen, and a step of keeping the vessel at a temperature higher than the liquefaction temperature and below the freezing temperature.

A catalyst support, a catalyst using the catalyst support and a process for producing the same are disclosed. For instance, the catalyst support includes a composite oxide powder produced by spraying and burning a W/O type emulsion, the W/O type emulsion including an aqueous solution dispersed in an organic solvent, the aqueous solution containing aluminum as a major component and at least one co-metallic element in addition to the aluminum. Thus, the catalyst support can be produced less expensively without using any expensive alkoxide. Further, due to the spraying and burning, the composite oxide powder is composed of porous hollow particles which have a very thin shell thickness of dozens of nanometers, and makes the catalyst support which is amorphous and exhibits a large specific surface area. Hence, the catalyst support can maintain the large specific surface area even after a high-temperature durability test. Furthermore, the composite oxide powder includes the co-metallic element which is composited in such a highly dispersed manner that the agglomerated sulfates are less likely to be produced. Therefore, the catalyst support is inhibited from being poisoned by sulfur.

This invention relates to a catalyst for purifying an exhaust gas using a complex oxide having good heat-resistant and a purification performance which does not undergo degradation, particularly in a lean atmosphere at a high temperature of about 1,000.degree. C., by using the complex oxide containing platinum and at least one member of element selected from the group from an alkaline earth metal element and the Group IIIA element and, furthermore, by using at least one member of platinum complex oxides selected from the group of those Pt complex oxides expressed by the chemical structural formulas X.sub.4 PtO.sub.6 (X=Ca, Sr, Ba, Mg), X'.sub.2 Pt.sub.2 O.sub.7 (X'=Sc, La, Pr), SrX'PtO.sub.6 (X'=Co, Ni, Cu), Ba.sub.2 ZPtO.sub.6 (Z=Pr, Ce) and Ba.sub.8 Y.sub.3 Pt.sub.4 O.sub.17.5.

Ceramics adapted to be enveloped in a casting having a cumulative particle size distribution such that the percentage of particles with sizes of less than 44.mu. lies within the range of 14.5-50% and the balance consists of particles the maximum size of which ranges from 500-2,000.mu., in order to produce vibration-resistant ceramic parts which may be enveloped in a casting.

A piston head structure in which a piston head made of a ceramic is firmly secured to the top portion of a metallic piston body through the medium of a metallic ring fitted to the lower part of the piston head. In assembling, the ceramic piston head to which the metallic ring is fitted beforehand is secured to the top portion of the piston body by a shrink fit or, alternatively, the assembly of the ceramic piston head and the metallic ring is inserted to the metallic material of the piston body during casting of the latter, and the cast piston body is then subjected to necessary mechanical processing. In this structure, the separation of the piston head from the piston body is prevented due to the close fit of the ceramic piston head and the metallic ring to the metallic piston body. Such a fit prevents separation even when the piston body is expanded due to the heat generated during operation of the engine. In addition, the ceramic piston head is protected by the metallic ring against any external force which acts to cause a cracking or breakage of the ceramic piston head, during the production of the piston.

A disc brake having a pair of pistons composed of a Devitroceramics having a heat conductivity of about 1.times.10.sup.-3 cal/cm.sec..degree.C. to about 4.times.10.sup.-2 cal/cm.sec..degree.C., a bend strength of about 5 kg/mm.sup.2 to about 55 kg/mm.sup.2, a Vickers' hardness of about 400, and a density of smaller than about 4.0 g/cm.sup.3. A method of manufacturing the disc brake comprises incorporating into the disc brake a pair of pistons which are prepared by mixing the component materials of the Devitroceramics, melting them to a homogeneous molten state, molding the molten materials into a piston-shaped article, annealing the article for crystallization and heating the article.

Metallized layers are formed respectively on the surfaces to be joined of the ceramic members by performing metallized treatment on the surfaces, and then, these metallized layers are pressed against each other, and under pressure are diffusion-bonded at high temperature. A metal foil which can form a solid solution with the metallized layers can be interposed between the metallized layers before diffusion-bonding. This method can be used to manufacture an oxygen sensor element.
