For accomplishing the subjects, the invention provides a nickel electrode material for use in a nickel electrode, wherein the positive-electrode material constituting the electrode material comprises: positive active material particles which comprise as the main component either a nickel hydroxide or a solid solution in a nickel hydroxide of one or more other elements and in which part of the nickel hydroxide has been oxidized; and a coating layer formed on the surface of the positive active material particles and comprising as the main component a high-order cobalt compound in which the cobalt has an oxidation number larger than 2, the average oxidation number of the nickel in the positive active material particles and the cobalt in the coating layer being from 2.04 to 2.40, and the positive-electrode material having a tap density of 2.0 g/cmor higher. The invention further provides a process for producing the electrode material, a nickel electrode employing the electrode material, and an alkaline storage battery having the nickel electrode.

Hydrogen absorbing electrode, nickel electrode and alkaline storage

A hydrogen absorbing electrode using a hydrogen absorbing alloy including at least one or more kinds of transition metals belonging to VIIb-group, VIII-group or Ib-group in periodic table at a specified percentage, characterized in that a surface part of the hydrogen absorbing alloy forms a rich layer including the foregoing transition metals at a percentage larger than the foregoing specified percentage. Since the rich layer exists, an activation at initial stage of charge/discharge is not required. Accordingly, this electrode can be utilized effectively for a nickel-hydride secondary battery.

Hydrogen absorbing electrode and its manufacturing method

A metal hydride electrode, in which a metallic cobalt powder is mixed, within a mixing range of 3 to 20 weight percents, with a hydrogen absorbing alloy powder formed by substituting a part of Ni of alloy expressed by a rational formula of MmNi.sub.5 with Al and at least one kind of Fe, Cu, Co, Mn, and the mixed powder is loaded in a porous alkaline-proof metal body. An nickel electrode, in which a cobalt monoxide powder is mixed with an active material powder within a mixing range of 5 to 15 weight percents, the active material powder comprising zinc existing within a range of 2 to 8 weight percents, under a solid solution state in a crystal of nickel hydroxide powder assuming a spherical shape including an inner pore volume of 0.14 ml/g or less, and the mixed powder is loaded in a porous alkaline-proof metal body. A nickel-hydrogen battery, in-which the foregoing metal hydride electrode and the foregoing nickel electrode are wound with a separator put between them, aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide is filled therein and sealed, and they are maintained under standing condition for 5 hours or more.

Nickel electrode for alkaline battery

A nickel electrode for use in an alkaline battery using a network-like alkaline-proof metal mesh having pores at the inside thereof as a core metal current collector, as well as an alkaline battery using such a nickel electrode. Inexpensive nickel electrode having high performance, great capacity can be obtained at high productivity.

A nickel electrode for an alkaline battery comprises a porous alkaline-proof metal fiber substrate used as a current collector, and active material for the electrode. The active material includes nickel hydroxide powder active material, to which zinc or magnesium is added at a rate in a range of 3-10 wt % or 1-3 wt %, respectively. The zinc and magnesium is in a solid solution in crystal of the nickel hydroxide, and the active material forms principle compound of paste, which is loaded in the electrode.

A nickel electrode for an alkaline battery includes a porous alkali-proof metal fiber substrate as a current collector and an active material principally formed of a nickel hydroxide powder is precluded from formation of the higher oxide, .gamma.-NiOOH, is improved in the ratio of utilization of the active material, and is provided with a high energy density and a long service life when the nickel hydroxide powder employed therein possesses a pore radius in the range of 15 to 30 .ANG., a total pore volume of not more than 0.05 ml/g, and a specific surface area in the range of 15 to 30 m.sup.2 /g. An alkaline battery is also provided by the invention which uses the nickel electrode described above.
