A multicolor serial printer has a color switching means interposed between an end of a carriage and type wheels having a group of first-color printing types and a group of second-color printing types. The color switching means has first-color and second color printing stepped surfaces selectively movable into confronting relationship with a member of the carriage. When the member of the carriage abuts on and engages in a first-color printing stepped surface or a second-color printing stepped surface during carriage shifting movement, a presser of a hammer means, mounted on the carriage and positioned within the type wheels, is brought into confronting relation to the group of first-color printing types or the group of second-color printing types for printing a desired character in the group in a first or second color.

In a miniature printer for printing with dots on printing paper, concentrically mounted driving cams provide both horizontal and vertical motions which synchronize the reciprocating action of the printing head mechanism with the paper feed and ink ribbon feed mechanism. Constant velocity linear motion is provided for the print head. The printing paper may be removed in either direction from the printer.

In a dot printer head, a small, thin and flat lever or chip pivots on a fulcrum when attracted by an electromagnetic coil. Pivoting of the chip on the fulcrum drives a needle, in opposition to a biasing spring, against an ink ribbon and paper for printing on the paper with dots. The biasing spring returns the needle after printing. The fulcrum is positioned by a resilient restraint comprising a leaf spring. The magnetic gap between the coil and chip is small but provides a long needle stroke because of the mechanical advantage in the pivoting element. The gap requires no adjustments. The printer head includes a plurality of similar independently operating needles and drive mechanisms.

The head portion of a dot printer includes a cup-shaped yoke, an electromagnet on a coil frame, an iron core within said coil frame, said core being securely fixed to said cup-shaped yoke, a second yoke, a movable element comprising a second iron core disposed for attraction by said electromagnet and a holding member for holding said movable element for rotation around a fulcrum on said fulcrum member. The structure is such that tolerances can be held closely in mass production, thereby providing high reliability and high quality printing at low cost.
