An image display method includes generating luminance data, correcting the luminance data, generating gradation setting data, and controlling a backlight to operate based on the luminance setting data and a liquid crystal panel to operate based on the gradation setting data. The luminance data indicates a luminance value for each light-emitting region of the backlight and is generated based on a maximum gradation value among gradation values of image pixels of an input image that correspond to the light-emitting region. The luminance data is corrected such that, with respect to each light-emitting region, the luminance value is within a predetermined range below a maximum value among the luminance values of neighboring light-emitting regions, and luminance setting data is generated therefrom. The gradation setting data sets a gradation value of each pixel of the liquid crystal panel, and generated based on the input image and the luminance setting data.

Luminance control of backlight in display of image

An image display method using an image display device is provided. The method includes performing a first operation to cause light to be emitted from light-emitting regions of a backlight at respective intensity in accordance with frame image data, sequentially with respect to each of first areas of the backlight, and performing a second operation to apply voltages to pixels of a liquid crystal panel at respective levels in accordance with the frame image data, sequentially with respect to each of second areas of the liquid crystal panel. Light-emitting regions in each of the first areas are repeatedly turned on and off a plurality of times during the first operation thereof.

Image display method and image display device

A method includes generating luminance setting data, luminance estimation data, maximum luminance data, and gradation setting data, and controlling a backlight panel and a liquid crystal panel based on the luminance setting data and the gradation setting data, respectively. The luminance setting data sets a luminance value for each light-emitting region of the backlight panel and is generated based on an input image. The luminance estimation data indicates an estimated luminance value of backlight for the input image with respect to each pixel of the liquid crystal panel and is generated based on the luminance setting data and luminance profile data. The maximum luminance data is generated based on the luminance estimation data. The gradation setting data sets a gradation value of each pixel of the liquid crystal panel for the input image, and is generated based on the input image, the luminance estimation data, and the maximum luminance data.

Gradation control in display of image

An image display method includes generating luminance data, applying a special filter to the luminance data, generating luminance setting data, generating gradation setting data, and controlling a backlight based on the luminance setting data and a liquid crystal panel based on the gradation setting data. The luminance data indicates a luminance value for each of light-emitting regions of the backlight based on a maximum gradation value among gradation values of image pixels of an input image that correspond to the light-emitting region. The special filter is applied such that, with respect to each light-emitting region, a difference of the luminance value thereof from the luminance values of neighboring light-emitting regions decreases, and the luminance setting data is generated therefrom. The gradation setting data sets a gradation value of each pixel of the liquid crystal panel, and is generated based on the input image and the luminance setting data.

In an image display method, a backlight is divided into first areas in a first direction. Each of the first areas includes light-emitting regions. A liquid crystal panel is divided into second areas in the first direction. In the method, a first operation to cause light to be emitted from the light-emitting regions at respective intensity in accordance with frame image data is performed sequentially with respect to each of the first areas. Further, a second operation to apply voltages to the pixels at respective levels in accordance with the frame image data is performed sequentially with respect to each of the second areas. A timing at which the first operation with respect to each of the first areas is started is delayed from a timing at which the second operation with respect to a corresponding one of the second areas is started by a predetermined interval.

An image display method includes, with respect to each of a plurality of input images, generating luminance setting data that sets a luminance value for each of a plurality of light-emitting regions of a backlight configured in a matrix form based on the input image, generating gradation setting data that sets a gradation value for each of a plurality of pixels of a liquid crystal panel coupled to the backlight, based on the generated luminance setting data and the input image, and controlling the backlight based on the luminance setting data and the liquid crystal panel based on the gradation setting data to display an image. At least one of the luminance setting data and the gradation setting data for a first input image among the plurality of input images is generated based on the luminance setting data for a second input image immediately preceding the first input image.
