An ink fountain has one side closed by a fountain roller constantly exposed to the ink contained therein. Forming a part of the fountain bottom, a blade assembly defines in combination with the fountain roller an ink outlet which is to be closed and opened as the blade assembly travels toward and away from the fountain roller. Sprung away from the fountain roller, the blade assembly is moved toward the fountain roller against the spring bias by at least two linear actuators such as double-ended-rod fluid actuators spaced from each other in the axial direction of the fountain roller. The output members of the linear actuators, such as the reciprocable cylinders of the double-ended-rod fluid actuators, are rigidly interconnected as by a simple link, being aligned parallel to the fountain roller axis, for synchronous operation, thereby conjointly causing the travel of the blade assembly into leak-free contact with the fountain roller.

Leak-free ink supply apparatus for keyless printing

An ink supply unit of a keyless printing press is capable of preventing leakage of an ink while printing is interrupted. The ink supply unit includes a movable blade provided between the both side plates in integral form, inclined descending toward a tip end side, supported on a base for movement toward and away from the peripheral surface of the fountain roller, driving means for driving the movable blade between a position where a tip end of the movable blade contacts to the peripheral surface of the fountain roller and a predetermined position where the tip end of the movable blade is located away from the peripheral surface of the fountain roller, and guide means coupled with the movable blade and guiding the movable blade so that the tip end of the movable blade moves with respect to the peripheral surface of the fountain roller with maintaining a predetermined attitude.

An ink fountain divider, which is capable of completely preventing leakage of ink and is easy to handle, includes an ink fountain divider body which has an approximately triangular shaped cross-section having a bottom edge having a contour line conforming with the outer peripheral surface of the ink fountain roller, and another edge having a contour line conforming with the an upper surface of the bottom plate, having a given width in a direction parallel to an axis of the ink fountain roller. The ink fountain divider body is formed of a non-magnetic material having a hardness smaller than that of a material forming the outer peripheral surface of the ink fountain roller. The ink fountain divider body contacts with the bottom plate of the ink fountain arrangement for dividing an ink storage space in the ink fountain arrangement. A magnetically attracting device is integrally provided within the ink fountain divider body in integral fashion therewith in a condition exposing a magnetically attracting surface in the lower surface of the ink fountain divider body without projecting from the lower surface and with exposing a switching portion on the upper surface thereof for selectively switching generation and extinguishing a magnetic force for firmly fitting the lower surface of the ink fountain divider body onto the bottom plate, for selectively generating and extinguishing the magnetic force.

A printing plate lock-up apparatus for a plate cylinder in a printing press comprises a groove defined in the plate cylinder and having an essentially circular cross section, the groove having an opening end opening to the outer periphery of the plate cylinder and having a width in the circumferential direction smaller than the internal diameter, the opening end having one edge engageable with a turned back edge of the printing plate, an engaging member disposed along the groove and having mating surfaces slidably contacting with the inner periphery of the groove for permitting rotation of the engaging member relative to the groove, the engaging member having an engaging hook engageable with a turned back edge, and having a thickness permitting withdrawal and installation through the opening end, and an operation assembly cooperating with the engaging member for operating the latter to rotate within the groove, the operation assembly maintaining an angular phase of the engaging means at least in the position where the engaging hook of the engaging member hooks the trailing end side turned back edge.

A printing plate locking device is designed to facilitate clamping a printing plate to and from a plate cylinder in a rotary press without using any external tools. The printing plate device includes a printing plate tensioning device, arranged in the plate cylinder, which can be engaged with one end of the printing plate to tension the printing plate. The printing plate locking device also includes a lever which is operatively connected to the tensioning device; and a retaining device for holding the lever in a holding position when the tensioning device puts tension on the printing plate. A method of clamping the printing plate utilizes the printing plate locking device structure.

An ink device has an ink feeding route including an ink metering roller and an ink storage device whose distance toward the revolving direction of the upstream roller of said ink feeding route gradually decreases.

A BB-type printing press employing a divided plate cylinder has a novel drive gear train for avoiding rotation in the associated rotating condition and whereby to maintain satisfactory level of sharpness and/or clearness of printed patterns. The BB-type printing press comprises a pair of plate cylinders respectively carrying printing plates, each of the plate cylinders being separated into axially aligned a first plate cylinder component and a second plate cylinder component for rotation at independently adjustable rotational phases, a pair of blanket cylinders respectively carrying blankets and associated with the plate cylinders for receiving printing pattern of the printing plates to transfer onto both sides of a printing medium, the blanket cylinders having slightly different finished diameters from that of the plate cylinders, and a drive gear train for driving the plate cylinders and the blanket cylinders in synchronism with each other with maintaining desired phase relationship therebetween, the drive gear train establishing a path for power transmission so that the driving power is first transmitted to one of the plate cylinders and the blanket cylinders having smaller finished diameter and subsequently to the other.

In a multicolor printing press which has a plurality of printing sections arranged in vertical alignment, the multicolor printing press facilitates adjustment of register position between a plurality of printing sections. The multicolor printing press thus has a first printing section which includes at least one first plate cylinder, and at least one second printing section which includes at least one second plate cylinder. The multicolor printing press is also provided with means for rotatably supporting the first plate cylinder in a fixed register position for providing reference position in adjustment of register position in the second printing section, means for rotatably supporting the second plate cylinder, and adjusting means of register position of said second plate cylinder relative to the reference position defined by the first plate cylinder.

In a multicolor printing press which has a plurality of printing sections arranged in vertical alignment, the multicolor printing press facilitates adjustment of register position along the feeding direction of a printing medium. The multicolor printing press comprises a plurality of printing sections arranged in vertical alignment, a plurality of the printing sections each including at least one plate cylinder for transferring printing pattern defined on a printing plate carried thereon to a printing medium on which the printing pattern is to be printed, and means, associated with the plate cylinder, for adjusting rotational phase of the plate cylinder relative to the printing medium for adjustment of register position of the printing pattern on the printing medium.

A lithographic press includes a plate cylinder having an outer surface which includes a first outer section and a second outer section, and at least one printing plate disposed around one of the first and second outer sections in parallel to a rotational axis of the plate cylinder. The other of the first and second outer sections is uncovered and exposed to the ambient environment. The lithographic press also includes an ink supplying device which feeds ink to the at least one printing plate and the other of the first and second outer sections, and an ink removing device having a contact member which contacts the other of the first and second outer sections of the plate cylinder and removes ink therefrom. A method for removing ink from the other of the first and second outer sections includes removing the ink by way of contact between the ink removing device and the other of the first and second section of the outer surface of the plate cylinder.

An ink-furnishing apparatus for continuously supplying ink to an ink cylinder from an ink rail even during high speed operation of the ink cylinder. An ink transfer surface of the ink rail has a first solid substance which is superior to a cast iron constituting the ink rail in terms of separation of ink therefrom. A peripheral surface of the ink cylinder has a second solid substance which is superior to the first solid substance in terms of adhesion of the ink thereon. While said first solid substance has a surface which makes a larger contact angle with a surface of the ink than a contact angle made between the surface of the ink and the surface of cast iron constituting said ink rail, said second solid substance has a surface which makes a smaller contact angle with the surface of the ink than said larger contact angle.
