Novel organic mixed complexes are provided which have the general formula

A cyclohexane-2,5-dione-1,4-ylene-bis (-3-propionic acid) derivative represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or alkyl. The derivative is prepared by heating a cyclohexane-2,5-dione derivative represented by the formula ##STR2## wherein R is as defined above, and R.sub.1 is alkyl, in the presence of water.

7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane-2,5-ylene-(3-propionic acid) and derivatives thereof represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each hydrogen or alkyl. The compounds are useful as materials for preparing polyesters, polyamides and polyurethanes or as intermediates for tetracyanoquinodimethanes for use as organic semiconductors.

A process for preparing acetic acid ester by reacting acetic acid with an aliphatic lower olefin in vapor phase in the presence of steam and a catalyst selected from aromatic disulfonic acids and their esters. The high activity of the catalyst can be maintained and the product is obtained in a high space time yield by the presence of steam in the reaction. The effect of maintaining the high activity can be further increased by using silica treated with a strong acid as a carrier.

C. Sorbic acid is economically prepared with ease and with simple procedures.
