A method of targeted corruption of user data in a shingled magnetic recording disk includes identifying user data on a Track_N targeted for corruption; identifying a readback centerline of the Track_N; identifying a readback centerline of an adjacent track to Track_N; acquiring user data of the adjacent track; and rewriting the user data of the adjacent track with an offset write centerline to overwrite magnetic material at the readback centerlines of both Track_N and the adjacent track.

System, method and apparatus for shingled magnetic recording in disk drives

Embodiments of the present invention help to accomplish accurate and reliable clearance control. In one embodiment of the present invention, a disk drive device adjusts the clearance between a head element portion and a disk with a heater on a slider. The clearance control according to the present embodiment incorporates the variation in heater power efficiency in the clearance variation depending on the radial position. The clearance variation in a unit of heater power varies depending on the radial position. Taking account of the variation in the heater power efficiency in the thermal fly-height control (TFC) depending on the radial position in addition to the clearance variation between the head element portion and the disk caused by variation in fly-height or attitude, accomplishes more accurate TFC.

Embodiments in accordance with the present invention relate to improving error recovery process performance. A head slider in an embodiment of this invention includes a heater for adjusting a clearance between a head element section and a magnetic disk. During an error recovery process (ERP) for a reading error, if a particular environmental temperature is in a low-temperature region, a microprocessing unit (MPU) executes the ERP steps of increasing a heater power value of the heater (i.e., STEP X to STEP X+2), preferentially over the ERP steps of reducing the heater power (i.e., STEP X+3 to STEP X+5). In the low-temperature region, the possibility of error recovery in an earlier step can be raised by executing the heater power increasing ERP steps earlier than the heater power reducing ERP steps.

Embodiments of the invention reduce a possibility that a head will collide with a medium when the clearance between the head and the medium is adjusted by using a medium, and sufficiently reduce the clearance even at an initial stage of accessing a data area. In one embodiment, a hard disk drive (HDD) keeps a heater in an OFF state for a period of time from the start of seek operation until the specified timing after a following mode starts. This prevents a head element from colliding with a magnetic disk, and also prevents flying properties from changing due to the deformation of the ABS. In the above specified timing, the heater is switched from OFF to ON. Specifically, for example, on completion of seek operation, in the timing in which a head arrives at a target track, or in the timing in which an HDC/MPU enters the following mode, the heater is turned ON.

A mechanism for compensating the servo data in a disk storage drive is provided. On each recording surface of a disk, a plurality of servo regions are diametrally formed in data regions along the diametral direction of the disk. In the servo region, a gray code (cyclic binary code) representing the address of a data track is recorded so as to correspond to the data track, and a burst pattern as a signal for positioning the head on the track are recorded. In the data track region, tracks are formed at a predetermined pitch P and in the tracks, a plurality of data is recorded. ID (Identification) is the identification information of the individual data. A servo compensation signal region is formed at a position sandwiched by the data region and the servo region known as the write recovery area. This is to compensate the servo signal in the servo region, thereby to enable error recovery when a read error or the like occurs in the servo region.

A camera is provided with automatic focusing circuitry which is arranged to begin to operate to drive a focusing motor, in response to an operation performed on a shutter release button, to bring the motor to a stop upon detection of an in-focus state and to produce an in-focus signal. Photometric circuitry is arranged to begin to operate in response to the operation on the release button to obtain a photometric value by detecting the luminance of an object to be photographed, and to be capable of renewing the photometric value in response to a change in the luminance of the object. The photometric value is locked in response to the generation of the in-focus signal. Control circuitry means which controls the photometric apparatus in response to cancellation of the operation on the release button. The control circuitry unlocks the photometric value kept at the photometric apparatus and allows the photometric apparatus to operate to obtain another photometric value by detecting the luminance of the object once more within a predetermined period of time.

A motor-driven camera of the prewind type arranged to perform a preliminary film winding action continuously from an automatic film loading onto a take-up spool before photographing and, thereafter, to rewind the film for every photographing shot includes an electric film counter arranged to count the number of frames of the film according to the transport of the film, a detecting device for detecting the movement of the film, and a detecting circuit which detects a cause for the immovable state of the film when the detecting device has detected the immovable state of the film. A motor-driven camera of the so-called prewind type in which a film is preliminary wound to effect a prewinding action and then the film is rewound for every photographing shot, includes an electric film counter which counts the number of frames on the basis of a signal generated according to the movement of the film; a control circuit which determines the number of photographable frames on the basis of a counted value of the electric film counter; a detection circuit which detects the completion of the prewinding action by detecting that the film ceases to move; and a judgment circuit which is arranged to detect the state of the above-stated signal after the lapse of a predetermined period of time from the completion of the prewinding action detected by the detection circuit, to judge whether or not a change in the counted value of the electric film counter is necessary.

A deflector for a cathode ray tube (called herein 'CRT'), and more particularly a stator type deflector in which a plurality of slots for windings are formed in the inner surface of a tubular core and deflecting coils are positioned in these slots. Both convergence (spot) distortion and raster (pin cushion) distortion are small. The magnetic field distribution at the neck is a barrel type, and that at the screen is a pin cushion type. Both the horizontal and the vertical magnetic fields are obtained by adjusting the positioning of the winding slots formed in the inner surface of the tubular core for positioning the deflecting coils. This is accomplished by adjusting the angles of the plurality of winding slots formed in the inner surface of the tubular core which contain the deflecting coils.
