A host computer and primary and secondary storage devices are connected as capable of communicating with each other via a network, the primary and secondary storage devices functioning as data storage means of the host computer. The host computer transmits data to be written and a write request Wa to the primary storage device in writing of data into the primary storage device and transmits the data to be written and a write request Wb to the secondary storage device at any point in time after the foregoing transmission. The primary storage device receives the write request Wa and stores the data to be written. The secondary storage device receives the write request Wb and stores the data to be written.

Job execution within a computer system having a plurality of host computers is handled over an electronic mail system having a terminal and server, by the use of job control processing interfacing between the computer system and the electronic mail system. Job mail comprises job offer paper mail, job execution result mail, job execution progress mail and job data mail. The electronic mail system 2 stores job mail, converts the format, etc., of the job mail, and manages the electronic mail. The job control terminal 4 converts the format, etc., of the job mail, generates commands to the computer system on interpreting the job mail, selects a host computer for executing based upon the running state and/or load, etc. of the host computers 42 of the computer system 3, generates job mail based upon execution results and execution progress from the computer system and exchanges mail between the electronic mail system and the computer system. The computer system executes jobs in response to the job commands from the job control terminal 4, with execution starting time based upon a date when provided by the job mail.

Computer system and job executing method

In a data processing system in which data is transferred between memory areas through a transfer buffer shared by the memory areas, receive capability indication means which is commonly accessable by the memory areas and contains information indicating whether data can be transferred to the respective memory areas or not is provided, and data to be transferred from one memory area to other memory area is stored in the transfer buffer in accordance with the content of the receive capability indicator.

Method for controlling data transfer buffer

A data processing system in which, when a magnetic tape device is required for execution of a job, a group of magnetic tape devices is designated and an appropriate one of the magnetic tape devices in the designated group is selected and allocated to the job. In order to start the execution of the job as early as possible, status data indicating whether a magnetic tape is loaded in a device and is being rewound or not is read, and one of the magnetic tape devices in the designated group, which is not loaded with a magnetic tape, is selected to have a top priority. In the absence of such a device, a magnetic tape device loaded with a magnetic tape which is not being rewound is selected in preference to the others.
