A method for making a cellular rubber is described, in which water is added to a high water absorption resin, followed by allowing the resulting mixture to stand and form a hydrous gel. The hydrous gel, with or without a foaming agent, is added to a rubber compound and subjected to foaming under conditions sufficient for vulcanization thereby obtaining a cellular rubber having a closed cell structure. The phenyl and/or phenol groups may be a constituent of the carrier itself, or they may be a constituent of a separate compound affixed to the carrier surface, directly or through use of a coupling agent.
