A number of embodiments of outboard motors employing direct fuel injection systems having high pressure fuel pumps that are mechanically driven off of the engine crankshaft. A wide variety of driving arrangements are disclosed which include direct and indirect drives and drive that employs flexible transmitters and other types of driving arrangements. Furthermore, the pump operating mechanisms are also provided with lubricating systems that will permit servicing of the lubricant even though the drive arrangement may be positioned outside of the crankcase of the engine. Furthermore, arrangements for mounting various components including the fuel pump and other engine-driven accessories in an outboard motor are shown.

Fuel supply system for injected engine

A fuel supply system for providing fuel from a fuel source to a combustion chamber of an engine is disclosed. The fuel supply system includes a vapor separator in which vapor is separated from fuel supplied from the fuel source. A pre-pressurizing pump pressurizes fuel from the vapor separator to a first pressure and delivers it to a high pressure pump. The high pressure pump pressurizes the fuel to a pressure above the first pressure and delivers it to a fuel rail to which is connected a fuel injector for delivering fuel into the combustion chamber. A fuel return line extends from the fuel rail for returning undelivered fuel back to the fuel system. A valve controls the flow of fuel through the return line and maintains the fuel at high pressure in the fuel rail. A fuel cooler is provided along the return fuel line.

Engine fuel supply system

A two-cycle engine having a plurality of combustion chambers, each chamber in communication with an air/fuel mixture delivery passage via a crankcase chamber, is disclosed. The engine includes a system for delivering fuel which precipitates out of the air/fuel mixture within the delivery passage to the combustion chambers. The system includes at least one fuel catch in the form of a trough positioned in each delivery passage and a fuel delivery passage extending from the catch to the combustion chamber.

Drain system for two cycle engine

An exhaust gas purifying arrangement is provided for an outboard motor for a watercraft. At least one exhaust port is provided which opens into a first exhaust passage having a first catalyst member lining at least a portion of its inner wall. The first exhaust passage then opens into an exhaust expansion chamber. Next, a second exhaust passage originates just beyond the expansion chamber. A second catalyst member is mounted within and across a section of exhaust passage beyond the first exhaust passage and at a location above the water line within which the outboard motor operates. A first passageway is provided which leads from the second exhaust passage, from a position beyond the second catalyst member, to an exhaust outlet located at a position below a body of water in which the watercraft operates. And a second passageway leads from the second exhaust passage, also from a position beyond the second catalyst member, to an exhaust outlet located at a position above the body of water in which the watercraft operates. The catalyzer system of the invention is particularly useful for the treating of exhaust gases without introducing undesirable restrictions to exhaust gas flow.

Exhaust gas purifying device for an outboard motor

Several embodiments of fuel supply systems for outboard motors and particularly those embodying fuel injection systems and remotely positioned fuel tanks. In each embodiment, a device is incorporated in the power head of the outboard motor for maintaining a uniform pressure of fuel delivery to the fuel injection nozzles by recycling a portion of the fuel back into the fuel system and within the power head. In some embodiments, the fuel is recycled directly into the fuel line before the fuel pump. In others, the fuel is recycled to either a delivery tank or an accumulator chamber.

Fuel injection system for outboard motors

Several embodiments of outboard motors embodying two cycle internal combustion engines having an exhaust control valve and a decompression control valve that is operated in response to engine operating characteristics to improve performance and reduce noise. Embodiments are disclosed wherein the control is in response to throttle valve position, engine speed and/or exhaust gas pressure.

Piston for internal combustion engine

Embodiments of outboard motors incorporating improved exhaust gas systems for preventing the ingestion of water into the cylinders of an alternate firing multiple chamber internal combustion engine. The exhaust passages are provided with a restricted communication with each other at a point that is above the water under all running conditions so as to prevent water ingestion. In one embodiment, the exhaust passages communicate with an above the water exhaust gas discharge independently of each other and the restricted communication is provided between the passages by a restricted opening in an exhaust pipe. In another embodiment, the exhaust pipe forms an expansion chamber and the individual exhaust passages communicate with this expansion chamber at points close to each other through restricted openings for providing the communication.

Exhaust system for outboard motor

A lubricating system for an internal combustion engine including a separate lubricating pump that operates with cyclically operating pressure. Detecting means are incorporated for damping the output pressure of the pump and sensing the damped pressure to insure adequate operation of the system.

Oil discharge detecting device for marine engine

A separate lubricating system for an engine including a lubricant reservoir and a system for delivering lubricant from the reservoir to the engine for its lubrication. A sensing device is provided in the lubricant system for sensing the lubricant flow and comparing it with a desired flow for providing a warning signal in the event of inadequate lubricant flow. The invention is illustrated in a specific embodiment as applied to an outboard motor.

Silencer for outboard engine

An induction system for a two-cycle crankcase compression internal combustion engine of the type employed in an outboard motor. As such, the engine has vertically disposed crankcase chambers. Two barrel carburetors serve the crankcase chambers of the cylinder pairs through an intake manifold which has respective intake passages that each slope downwardly so as to avoid variations in mixture strength.

Intake device for outboard engine

A cold enrichment device for an internal combustion engine having a pair of parallel flow paths communicating with the engine for delivering cold enrichment fuel. One of the flow paths includes a valve that is responsive to starting of the engine for delivering fuel for a predetermined time period whereas the other flow path includes a temperature responsive valve for providing cold running enrichment fuel.
