A display device includes a first diffraction element that deflects image light and causes the image light to be incident on an eye of an observer, and a second diffraction element disposed between an image light projecting device and the first diffraction element. A diffraction direction of the first diffraction element and the second diffraction element is set depending on whether a sum of the number of reflections of light and the number of times of generating intermediate image between the second diffraction element and the first diffraction element is an even number or an odd number. For example, when the sum is an even number, a direction in which light incident on a first incident surface is diffracted at the highest diffraction efficiency is the same direction as a direction in which light incident on a second incident surface is diffracted at the highest diffraction efficiency.

Projector

A projector includes an illumination device, a color separation system, a light combining system, a projection system, and an optical adjustment portion. The color separation system separates the light emitted from the illumination device into blue light, red light, and green light. The light combining system can have a first dichroic filter reflecting one of blue light or red light, and a second dichroic filter reflecting green light which are placed in a crossed state and can combine image lights of respective colors exiting from the first through third light modulation devices. The projection system can project a combined light exiting from the light combining system while correcting chromatic aberrations of magnification of blue light and red light with respect to green light. The optical adjustment portion can adjust a size of an image light corresponding to the green light of the combined light exiting from the light combining system.

Method of forming a colored layer on a microlens substrate, a microlens substrate, a transmission screen and a rear projection

The invention provides a transmissive screen having low occurrence of light diffraction and moire-fringing. The invention also provides a rear projector including such a high-quality transmissive screen. A transmissive screen, applied to a rear projector, includes a light-guide plate having substantially cylindrical light-guide spaces arranged in a flat substrate, and a light-exit-angle distribution uniformizing device to make the angular distribution of the light exiting from the substantially cylindrical light-guide spaces of the light-guide plate uniform over the transmissive screen. The light-exit-angle distribution uniformizing device is provided at the light-exiting face side of the light-guide plate. The invention also provides a rear projector including such a transmissive screen.

The invention provides a transmissive screen that can be manufactured at a low cost and show uniform diffusion and moire-free images over the entire screen, and provides a rear projector provided with such a superior transmissive screen. A transmissive screen can include a Fresnel lens portion having Fresnel-lens components on its light-exiting face and a lens array facing the light-exiting face of the Fresnel lens portion and having many lenses on its light-incident face. The transmissive screen can further include separating device for separating the Fresnel lens portion from the lens array portion at least in the periphery of the screen. Such a superior transmissive screen can be included in a rear projector.
