A method of producing a gas discharge panel includes forming a surrounding unit by positioning a first panel and a second panel together with barrier ribs to partition the space between the panels into cells for light emission when charged with a plasma gas and appropriately addressed. An anti-sealing material inflow rib surrounds the barrier ribs. Sealing material is positioned outside the anti-sealing material inflow rib. The pressure inside the surrounding unit is adjusted to be lower than pressure outside the surrounding unit while applying heat to fuse the sealing material between the first panel and the second panel whereby sealing material is prevented from inflowing into the cells between the barrier ribs during production.

Sealing method and apparatus for manufacturing high-performance gas discharge panel

A manufacturing apparatus for a PDP includes a unit for forming a protective layer protecting a dielectric layer on a first plate, a unit for baking a phosphor layer applied on a second plate, a unit for sealing the first and second plates arranged so that the protective layer faces the phosphor layer, and a unit for baking the first and second plates while exhausting a space between them. The four units are placed in one or more closed chamber. When the apparatus is driven, spaces in and between the closed chambers each contain a gas atmosphere with vapor partial pressure of 10 mPa or lower, or with a pressure of 1 Pa or lower, where the protective layer and the phosphor layer exhibit less water-absorbing property, preventing degradation of the PDP performances. The protective layer does not contact with atmospheric carbonic acid gas, preventing alteration thereof.

A manufacturing method for a gas discharge panel according to the invention can reduce the amount of water and gaseous molecules, which are absorbed into the first and the second substrates, to a minimum by keeping the both substrates under a reduced pressure, and therefore can prevent a degradation of a discharge gas filling the finished panel. As a result, problems in the finished panel such as increase in a discharge starting voltage and generation of an abnormal discharge can be suppressed.

Manufacturing method and manufacturing apparatus for a gas discharge panel

When a gas discharge panel is driven, a voltage is applied between scan and address electrode groups to perform set-up. The voltage waveform has four intervals. In a first interval, the voltage is raised in a short time (less than 10 &#x3bc;s) to a first voltage, wherein 100 V&#x2266;first voltage&#x3c;starting voltage. Then, in a second interval, the voltage is raised to a second voltage no less than the starting voltage and with an absolute gradient smaller than that for the voltage rise in the first interval (no more than 9 V/&#x3bc;s). Next, in a third interval, the voltage is lowered in a short time (no more than 10 &#x3bc;s) from the second voltage to a third voltage no more than the starting voltage. Following this, in a fourth interval, the voltage is lowered still further (for 100 &#x3bc;s to 250 &#x3bc;s) with a gradient smaller than that for the voltage fall in the third interval. The time occupied by the whole voltage waveform should be no more, than 360 &#x3bc;s. This means that a wall charge can be properly accumulated, allowing stable addressing to be performed even when the pulse applied during the address period is short (no more than 1.5 &#x3bc;s). This lengthens the discharge sustain period and improves luminance.

High resolution and high luminance plasma display panel and drive method for the same

A method is provided to steadily produce a gas discharge panel, such as a PDP, in which a panel and the top of the barrier ribs are in intimate contact in entirety. First a surrounding unit for the gas discharge panel is formed, then a process for sealing the surrounding unit with a sealing material inserted between two panels at the rim is performed while pressure is adjusted so that pressure inside the surrounding unit is lower than pressure outside. With this construction, the panels constituting the surrounding unit are bonded together while they are pressurized from outside. As a result, a panel and the top of the barrier ribs on the other panel are bonded together while they are in intimate contact in entirety. To fully acquire these effects, it is preferable that the adjustment of pressure starts before the sealing material hardens. During, before, or after the sealing step, an energy such as laser beams or ultrasonic waves may be radiated onto the top of the barrier ribs to bond a panel and the top of the barrier ribs in entirety almost without a gap between them.

To provide a display panel, such as a PDP, that can reduce noise caused by a collision sound which occurs when a front panel member and a back panel member vibrate while the display panel is being driven. Projections ( ) are provided on a surface of a first panel member facing a second panel member. The first panel member and the second panel member are connected to each other by a connecting material in areas ( ) where the projections intersect barrier ribs ( ). In this way, noise (noise level) caused by a collision sound which occurs when the front panel member and the back panel member vibrate while the display panel is being driven can be reduced.

Display panel and production method therefor

A plasma display device has a first plate and a second plate which face each other with a discharge space therebetween, and a sealing member which is provided between the first and second plates to seal the discharge space at edges of the first and second plates. A plurality of electrodes are formed on the inner major surface of the first or second plate. An electrode diffusion preventive layer is formed in each area where the plurality of electrodes cross over the sealing member, so as to avoid direct contact between the plurality of electrodes and the sealing member. As a result, problems such as breaking of the electrodes can be avoided. This construction is especially effective when the electrodes contain Ag.

The present invention provides a gas discharge panel on which color images are accurately displayed and which is easy to manufacture. The first and the second substrates face each other across an interval, forming a discharge space in between, which is filled with a discharge gas. Pairs of electrodes for sustaining discharge are provided on at least one of the two substrates, and phosphor layers are formed on the first substrate, arranged along the electrode pairs to form a matrix of discharge cells. An image is displayed by selectively illuminating discharge cells. Gap members having a given shape are provided between the first and second substrates at locations corresponding to the boundaries between discharge cells.
