A high-density layer can be formed and adherence increased by causing a slurry formed primarily from an electrode active material and a solvent and a slurry formed primarily from electrolyte particles and the solvent to alternately collide with a subject material with an impact force and to adhere and be layered thereon in thin film. A slurry formed primarily from a conductive additive and the solvent is separately created and is coated in a dispersed manner in a small quantity at a desired position. Carbon residue is eliminated or greatly reduced and battery performance improved by eliminating a binder or greatly reducing the binder content.

[PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED] To provide a method and apparatus for applying a coating material that reacts at ordinary temperatures and increases in viscosity with lapse of time or a coating material that is difficult to handle, such as an unstable slurry in which sedimentation occurs at high rate, to a high-value-added object to be coated. [SOLUTION] Before at least applying coating material to an object to be coated, the coating amount is automatically measured using a highly-accurate measuring device set in an atmosphere that does not substantially affect the measurement to control the coating amount during production. Therefore, high-quality products can be mass-produced with a low production cost.

Liquid dispensing method and apparatus

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for spraying powder into the interior of welded hollow can bodies from a spray gun mounted to the welding arm of a can forming machine. The spray gun can either apply a stripe of highly charged powder on the welded seam areas of hollow can bodies, or can simultaneously apply a coating of powder having a first thickness on the longitudinally welded seam areas and a second thickness less than the first thickness on the remainder of the interior surface. Air is vented off from the powder flow being transported through the welding arm so that the powder to air ratio is increased. Air is introduced at the downstream end of the welding arm to provide a suction force to help draw the powder flow through the welding arm and to increase the velocity of the powder flow for better tribo charging of the powder in the gun and to improve spray pattern stability. A flow of cleaning air through the powder spray gun prevents powder from collecting on the front surface of an offset nozzle secured to the spray gun. The gun assembly is affectively grounded to prevent arcing, and has an exterior shape which has been geometrically configured to improve powder coating of the can. A collector hood surrounds an input conveyor on which cans are transported while being spray coated and an output conveyor which removes the cans at a higher speed than at which they traveled on the input conveyor. The collector hood has two operating conditions for collecting oversprayed powder from between the cans during the spraying operation or directly from the gun when the cans are not being sent down the line.

A method and apparatus for deflecting a liquid or powder stream during dispensing with a plurality of independently actuatable flows. A gun has a nozzle with an orifice for dispensing a stream. Blowout ports surround the orifice and are aimed at the flow path of the stream, just beyond the end of the gun. The blowout ports are connected via conduits to a pressurized source. A timer actuates solenoid valves to control liquid or powder dispensing through the orifice and flows from the blowout ports. By coordinating liquid or powder dispensing with the directional flows, the stream may be deflected to achieve a desired dot or spray distribution pattern on a substrate or uniform spray coating of the inside surface of a can. Additionally, protective structure may be added to the end of the gun nozzle to eliminate the adverse effects typically caused by accumulation of some deflected liquid at the end of the gun nozzle.

Apparatus for powder coating welded cans

Methods and apparatus for spraying a liquid or hot melt material involve placing the material in a plurality of parallel grooves arranged across the entire width of a movable member and then causing a compressed gas to impinge upon the material in the grooves, thereby to spray the material from the grooves toward a substrate, as by extending, fiberizing or atomizing the material, or by mixing a gas with the material. For some materials of relatively high viscosity, a scraper is used to scrape the material from the grooves, and the compressed gas impinges the material while it is on the scraper, thereby to cause spraying. This provides a wide band deposition of a liquid or hot melt material with uniform material distribution across the entire width, along with improved ability to quantify the amount of material deposited on the substrate.

Methods and apparatus using movable member for spraying a liquid or hot

An improved powder particle supply and transport apparatus and method include a hopper filled with powder particles, an ejection chamber spaced from the hopper and a movable conveying member with a plurality of cavities formed therein. During operation, the conveying member moves the cavities between the hopper and the chamber, and the cavities are filled with powder particles at the hopper and emptied of powder particles at the chamber. An ejector nozzle sprays pressurized air into the chamber toward an aligned outlet, thereby to: 1) create negative pressure in the chamber to draw powder particles from the cavities as the cavities are moved therethrough; and 2) transport powder particles through the outlet to a spray gun. Additional structure may be used to assure complete powder filling of the cavities at the hopper and/or complete powder emptying of the cavities in the chamber. The invention achieves supply and transport of uniform and stable quantities of powder particles to a spray gun, even over very small units of time, regardless of powder particle size and/or cohesive properties.
