A method and a system for monitoring a condition of an elastic element used in a downhole tool are provided. The method comprises acquiring an output signal from a flexible-type sensor installed in the elastic element, the sensor sensing at least one of strain and stress of the elastic element, and estimating a condition of the elastic element based on the output signal from the sensor. The system comprises a flexible-type sensor installed in the elastic element, the sensor sensing at least one of strain and stress of the elastic element and a processor to acquire an output signal from the sensor and estimate a condition of the elastic element based on the output signal from the sensor.

Method and system for monitoring a condition of an elastic element used in a downhole tool

A seal assembly and an apparatus including the same are provided. The seal assembly may include a seal member with axially opposing sides and one or two back-up rings for substantially supporting at least one side of the seal member. The seal member may be made of elastomer and have an axially extending base with one or two flange portions and a protrusion extending perpendicularly from the base. The back-up ring may be made of a plastic material and a portion of the back-up ring may abut a radially outer surface of the flange portion of the seal member.

Seal assembly

A carbon fiber composite material comprising 100 parts by mass of an elastomer, and 20 to 100 parts by mass of carbon nanofibers that have been oxidized and reduced in number of branch points. The carbon fiber composite material has a dynamic modulus of elasticity (E') at 200&#xb0; C. and 10 Hz of 10 to 1000 MPa, and a volume resistivity of 10to 10ohms&#xb7;cm.

A seal member includes a hydrogenated acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (HNBR) and carbon nanofibers. The seal member has a number of cycles to fracture of 7000 or more when subjected to a tensile fatigue test at a temperature of 70&#xb0; C., a maximum tensile stress of 4 N/mm, and a frequency of 1 Hz. The seal member exhibits excellent abrasion resistance.

Seal member

The seal member includes a tetrafluoroethylene-propylene copolymer (FEPM) and carbon nanofibers. The seal member has a number of cycles to fracture of 10 or more when subjected to a tension fatigue test at a temperature of 150&#xb0; C., a maximum tensile stress of 2 N/mm, and a frequency of 1 Hz. The seal member exhibits excellent heat resistance and abrasion resistance.

A heat-resistant seal material includes 100 parts by weight of a ternary fluoroelastomer, 1 to 30 parts by weight of vapor-grown carbon fibers having an average diameter of more than 30 nm and 200 nm or less, and carbon black having an average particle diameter of 25 to 500 nm. The heat-resistant seal material contains the vapor-grown carbon fibers and the carbon black in an amount of 20 to 40 parts by weight in total. The heat-resistant seal material has a compression set when subjected to a compression set test at a compression rate of 25% and a temperature of 200&#xb0; C. for 70 hours of 0 to 15% and a dynamic modulus of elasticity at 200&#xb0; C. (E'/200&#xb0; C.) of 30 to 100 MPa.
