A communication system includes checking means for performing a check to detect whether a mobile device carried by a user of a vehicle is in the vehicle via wireless communication between an onboard device and the mobile device when a door of the vehicle has changed from being open to being closed; detecting means for detecting an operating state of an onboard electrical load when the check is performed by the checking means; and changing means for changing a maximum value of a number of rechecks, which is the number of times the check is allowed to be repeatedly performed by the checking means, according to the operating state of the onboard electrical load detected by the detecting means, when it has not been detected that the mobile device is in the vehicle by the check performed by the checking means.

A portable device for facilitating adjustment of the area in which communication with a controller is enabled. The portable device performs wireless communication with an in-vehicle device, which controls a door lock driver or an engine starter of a vehicle, to remotely control the in-vehicle device. The portable device includes a receiver for receiving a request signal from the in-vehicle device and a control unit for lowering or raising the signal receiving sensitivity of the receiver by predetermined levels to adjust the signal receiving sensitivity.

A steering lock for ensuring an unlock state when it is imperative that the steering lock remain in the unlock state. The steering lock includes a motor for generating drive force that engages and locks a lock bar with a steering shaft. The steering lock includes an ECU. When shifting the steering lock to the unlock state from a lock state, the ECU controls the motor to generate drive force acting in a direction to urge the lock bar to disengage from the steering shaft. The ECU continuously controls the motor to generate drive force acting in the direction to urge the lock bar to disengage from the steering shaft even after the lock bar has moved to the unlock position.

A multiplex communication system having a data repeater, which can prevent data from being lost so as to improve reliability of data communication, when a data repeater of a multiplex communication system repeats data. A multiplex communication system is made up of a plurality of communication groups including a plurality of communication lines and a data repeater. The data repeater is made up of receiving buffers, sending buffers, a data controller and a transfer-address table. The data controller selects multiplex communication lines through which the received data is to be repeated and transfers the received data thereto. The data controller has a priority-reset means for increasing a priority of a received data before being sent. The priority-reset means prioritizes a sending of the data from the data repeater, even if the data sent from the data repeater collides with the other data on the multiplex communication lines through which the received data is to be repeated. In this way, the priority-reset means prevents the data waiting for being sent in the data repeater from being lost by being overwritten with newly received data.

When a vehicle enters into the lower portion of a shielding member, a headlamp is switched on, and a condition flag is set to Set 1 which represents a waiting state in which the vehicle exterior is estimated to become bright/dark intermittently. When the condition flag is set to Set 1, when the vehicle enters into the lower portion of the shielding member, the condition flag is set from Set 1 to Set 2 which represents an intermittent state in which the vehicle exterior becomes bright/dark intermittently with high possibilities. When the condition flag is set to Set 2, a switch-off extension time CFE and a switch-off delay time CTF make a time until the headlamp is switched off. As a result, the time until the headlamp is switched off is delayed, and the headlamp is required to remain switched on at portions where the vehicle exterior becomes bright/dark intermittently.
