The method of the present invention is advantageously applicable to production of wire or rod of ceramics, particularly so called new ceramics or fine ceramics, sintered alloys or their combination, which are difficult of shaping or moulding by conventional process such as wire-drawing, rolling or extrusion of powder material and are difficult of machining or processing after the powder material is sintered.

Method for producing an elongated sintered article, characterized by the steps including filling powder material in a pipe, carrying out plastic deformation of the pipe filled with the powder material, and heating the pipe filled with the powder material to burn and/or sinter the powder material. The method of the present invention is advantageously applicable to production of wire or rod of ceramics, particularly so called new ceramics or fine ceramics, sintered alloys or their combination, which are difficult to shape or mold by conventional process such as wire-drawing, rolling or extrusion of powder material which is difficult to mold and machine after the powder material is sintered.

A coated cemented carbide with an improved wear resistance without lowering the toughness as a tool is provided comprising a substrate of a cemented carbide, the surface of which is coated with a multilayer of TiC, TiN and TiCN by the PVD method, the innermost layer in contact with the substrate being a TiN layer with a thickness of 0.1 to 1 .mu.m.

The present invention relates to gaseous phase synthesized diamond and a method for synthesizing the same. In order to obtain crystalline diamond having remarkably high completeness and hardly containing carbon having a construction other than that of diamond, raw material gases are thermally activated by a thermoelectron-radiating material heated at an extremely high temperature, the thermoelectron-radiating material being connected to a negative pole while a substrate to be coated is connected to a positive pole, by the use of a direct current power source, a plasma being formed between the thermoelectron-radiating material and the substrate and the substrate by applying a direct current voltage, and a diamond film having an average particle size of 2 microns or less, compression residual stress and electric resistance of 10.sup.8 ohm.cm or more being formed on the substrate by using the activation by the thermoelectron-radiating material together with the activation by the formation of DC plasma.

Gaseous phase synthesized diamond and method for synthesizing same

The method of the present invention is advantageously applicable to production of wire or rod of ceramics, particularly so called new ceramics or fine ceramics, sintered alloys or their combination, which are difficult of shaping or moulding by conventional process such as wire-drawing, rolling or extrusion or powder material and are difficult of machining or processing after the powder material is sintered.

The present invention relates to gaseous phase synthesized diamond and a method of synthesizing the same. In order to obtain crystalline diamond having remarkably high completeness and hardly containing carbon having a construction other than that of diamond, raw material gases are thermally activated by a thermoelectron-radiating material heated at an extremely high temperature, the thermoelectron-radiating material being connected to a negative pole while a substrate to be coated is connected to a positive pole, by the use of a direct current power source, a plasma being formed between the thermoelectron-radiating material and the substrate by applying a direct current voltage, and a diamond film having an average particle size of 2 microns or less, compression residual stress and electric resistance of 10.sup.8 ohm.cm or more being formed on the substrate by using the activation by the thermoelectron-radiating material together with the activation by the formation of DC plasma. In addition, homogeneous diamond particles uniform in shape can be obtained by using this method.

A method and apparatus for synthesizing diamond film or coating by applying low-pressurized vapor phase capable of precipitating diamond on the surface of a substrate by activating gas composed of carbon including solid carbon, hydrocarbon, and carbon tetrachloride respectively being mixed with hydrogen. More particularly, the invention relates to an apparatus and method of synthesizing diamond by disposing a grid between a thermoelectron-radiating material heated with activated material gas to a minimum of 1,600.degree. C., and the substrate to be coated, where the thermoelectron radiating material and grid are respectively used for the negative and positive electrodes, followed by provision of potentials by causing the positive and negative electrodes to respectively be connected to the grid and the substrate by arranging another power supply source. The method of synthesizing diamond according to the invention securely generates extremely fine crystalline diamond particles each having a maximum of 2 .mu.m of diameter and provides extremely consummate diamond film having a minimum of 10.sup.10 .OMEGA..multidot.cm of electric resistance, which is substantially the guide for determining the residal amount of carbon such as amorphous carbon and graphite.

Method for synthesizing diamond

High hardness and high toughness nitrogen-containing sintered hard alloys or cermets useful for cutting tools, in particular, high speed cutting are provided which comprises a hard dispersed phase consisting essentially of a mixed carbonitride of titanium and at least one element selected from the group consisting of Group IVa, Va, and VIa elements of Periodic Table, except titanium, and a binder metal phase consisting essentially of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of nickel and cobalt, and unavoidable impurities, the hard dispersed phase having previously been subjected to a solid solution forming treatment at a temperature of at least the sintering temperature before sintering.

High toughness cermet and a process for the production of the same

Multilayer coated cemented carbides excellent in wear resistance and toughness are provided comprising a substrate of cemented carbide, an inner layer contacted with the surface of the substrate, and an outer layer contacted with the inner layer, the inner layer being a single layer and/or laminated layers consisting of at least one member selected from the group consisting of carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides, carboxynitrides, oxynitrides, boronitrides and borocarbonitrides of Ti, and the outer layer being a multilayer with a total thickness of 5 to 20 .mu.m, consisting of a plurality of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 layer each having a thickness of 0.01 to 2 .mu.m, each consisting of an Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 film in which titanium oxide is dissolved or at most 30 vol % of titanium oxide is coexistent and being respectively divided by interlayers each having a thickness of 0.01 to 2 .mu.m and each consisting of at least one member of the group consisting of TiC, TiN, TiCN, TiCNO, TiNO, Ti oxides Ti(B, N), Ti(B, N, C), SiC, AlN and AlON.

Multilayer coated cemented carbides

A surface-coated article or part, for example, hard material-coated steels or cemented carbides for cutting tools, wear resisting tools, sliding parts or decoration articles, having good properties comparable to those obtained by the PVD method, can be produced by a plasma CVD method characterized by using jointly a high frequency source and a direct current source as a plasma exciting source, holding a substrate or base metal at a negative potential by the direct current source and adjusting a high frequency power density applied to a plasma-forming space to 0.01 to 1 W/cm.sup.3, an absolute value of a direct current voltage to at most 1500 V and a gaseous atmosphere pressure to 0.05 to 5 Torr.

Process for the production of a surface-coated article

The invention relates to a sintered hard metal having a high wear resistance and heat resistance as material for cutting tools and wear resistant tools and the method for producing the same. The sintered hard metal has a hard phase comprising a phase having a B-1 type crystal structure containing more than one kind of IVa, Va and VIa group metals in the Periodic Table and also the elements, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen and a WC phase, the hard phase and a bonding phase chiefly consisting of a ferrous metal which is sintered by a powder metallurgy technique, whereas the oxygen in particular is added thereto making it possible to obtain a sintered hard metal having said excellent properties.

Sintered hard metal and the method for producing the same

This invention relates to a sintered hard metal for cutting tools and having excellent wear resistance, resistance to thermal deformation, mechanical strength and the like. The present invention resides in the fact that the substrate metal consists of a rich content of the B-1 type hard phase and the surface thin layer consists of a rich content of the ordinary tungsten carbide. B-1 type crystal structure contains one or more Group IVa, Va and VIa metals, carbon, nitrogen and, moreover, tungsten. The thin layer structure has the layer of 5 to 200.mu. thickness on the surface thereof.

There is provided a coated tool steel having a tool steel substrate and at least one layer of a hard film overcoated on the substrate. The film consists of a B-1 type solid solution selected from carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of at least one of titanium, zirconium or hafnium, and the breadth of the peak, at half maximum intensity, of Cu-K.alpha. diffraction from the (200) plane of the film, being not less than 0.4 degree on a 2 .theta. scale. The invention further provides a machine tool having at least one cutting part thereof formed from the coated tool steel described above. The coated steel provided herein has excellent wear resistance.
