A safety relay system includes one or more additional input units each for sending safety input from a safety component, a master unit for receiving the safety input from the additional input unit and providing safety output to operate a safety relay based on the safety input, a safety information line for transferring safety information between the units, a non-safety information line for transferring non-safety information separate from the safety input, the non-safety information being information concerning an operation state of each safety component or each unit, and a non-safety information output section for outputting the non-safety information transferred on the non-safety information line.

By a user setting process, the set values of a number of scans and the LED lighting-on pulse-width are written, in advance, into a set value table stored in an EEPROM. Before a measurement starts, a CPU reads out table set values from the EEPROM, and a CCD-drive control circuit drives a CCD image sensor at the maximum operating frequency. After the measurement starts, a light-projection LED drive circuit lights on the light-projection LED array on the basis of the set value of the LED lighting-on pulse-width. The CCD-drive control circuit changes the interval of the outputting of a CCD-drive control signals CD on the basis of the set value of the number of scans.

A lighting apparatus includes: a plurality of light emitting diodes; a printed circuit board on which the light emitting diodes are arranged in one row; and a rod-like projection lens disposed in front of the light emitting diodes along a light emitting direction, for irradiating an object with light in a strip-like manner. Each of the light emitting diodes is a chip-type light emitting diode which has a substantially parallelpiped shape and which comprises a light-emitting face and a pair of electrode faces. The light-emitting faces are in a plurality of planes which are perpendicular to one common plane, respectively. An optical information reader has the lighting apparatus.
