Improved yarn for manufacturing artificial fur, having underfur and guard hairs. The guard hairs have a multiplicity of staple fibers having tapered ends. The underfur fibers are shorter and of less denier. The guard hairs and underfur fibers are relatively longitudinally slidable to separate at least some of the fibers from others of the fibers. Temporary binding means may be connected to maintain the respective fibers in continuity and resistant to longitudinal sliding separation during one or more fabrication operations. Inactivation of the binding means breaks the continuity of said pile fibers whereupon at least some of the fibers may be longitudinally slidingly separated without being broken.

An artificial fur composed of a warp pile fabric comprising a ground construction and pile yarns fixed to the ground construction and present in the form of fiber bundles within the ground construction. The pile yarns are composed of guard hair fibers and under fur fibers, the constituent fibers in the pile portion being opened and raised and the guard hair fibers of the pile yarns having the top ends thereof tapered. Plural kinds of pile yarns differing in at least one of the fineness, color, thickness, and length of fiber are used and a stripe pattern is manifested on the pile surface by arranging the alignment and/or density of the pile yarns appropriately.

In an artificial fur made from a pile cloth provided with a ground construction and numerous pile fibers projected upward from the ground construction, the pile fibers consist of a first group of pile fibers which form a layer of guard hair in the fur and a second group of pile fibers which form a layer of under fur in the fur, wherein each fiber of the first group is provided with a tapered free end portion and a tapered end portion firmly held by the ground construction; the pile fibers of the first group are longer than the pile fibers of the second group, while the thickness of the main portion of the former is thicker than the thickness of the latter. The above-mentioned artificial fur is manufactured by a first step of forming a material pile cloth provided with a ground construction and numerous yarn-like piles projected upward from the ground construction, and a second step of raising the side of said yarn-like piles. An intermediate step of applying a backing treatment to the pile cloth is preferably applied as a process between the above-mentioned two steps of processing. As a final process, a finishing process is applied to the material pile cloth. A conventional dyeing process can be applied.

In the apparatus for manufacturing a fasciated yarn from a bundle of fibers suppled from a supply mechanism into a yarn forming mechanism provided with a fluid nozzle, when the yarn forming operation is commenced, the distance between the downstream nip point of the fiber bundle supply mechanism and a twisting point of the fluid nozzle is shortened in a condition shorter than a predetermined distance such as an effective fiber length of a material fiber, and after completion of such initial yarn forming operation, the above-mentioned distance is gradually or stepwisely enlarged to the distance wherein a normal yarn forming operation is carried out. Such shortening and enlarging the above-mentioned distance is carried out by displacing the fluid nozzle and/or changing the position of the downstream nip point of the fiber bundle supply mechanism.
