A system and method for controlling ignition timing for an internal combustion engine to suppress engine knocking in which a periodic pseudo random signal (for example, M-series sequence signal) is superimposed on an ignition signal provided at an ignition timing, and a cross-correlation function between the periodic pseudo random signal .chi. and a knocking signal y is calculated to determine an actual knocking level. The ignition timing is then corrected so that the cross-correlation function coincides with a target value which is defined as a value placed in a vicinity of a knocking limit. The ignition timing for the engine is controlled so as to reach the value in the vicinity of the knocking limit but does not exceed the knocking limit.

System and method for controlling ignition timing to suppress engine

A system and method for self diagnosing an engine controlling system such as an ignition system, fuel injection system, and an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system are disclosed in which a periodic pseudo random signal is superposed on a control signal such as an ignition signal, fuel injection signal, or EGR rate controlled value indicating signal during an engine steady state condition, a cross-correlation function is calculated from both the superposed periodic random signal and output signal related to deterioration of the engine controlling system, and a value related to the cross-correlation function is compared with a reference value over which a performance of the engine controlling system cannot be maintained. If the value related to the cross-correlation function exceeds the reference value, the diagnostic system determines the occurrence of deterioration in the engine controlling system. The output related to the deteroration of the engine controlling system is, for example, a number of occurrences of misfiring determined according to change in engine revolutional speed. The periodic pseudo random signal is, for example, an M-series sequence signal. In the case of a diagnostic system for an EGR system the value related to the cross-correlation function may be, for example, a step response.

System and method for self diagnosing an engine control system

A throttle control system for an internal combustion engine includes a first lever which is pivotable around a longitudinal axis of a throttle shaft depending upon movement of an accelerator pedal, and a second lever which extends radially from the throttle shaft and is fixed thereto. The system further includes a transmitting mechanism which mechanically transmits pivotal motion of the first lever to the second lever so that the angular position of a throttle valve fixed to the throttle shaft varies in response to depression of the accelerator pedal. The transmitting mechanism optionally changes the ratio of the pivotal angle of the first lever from that of the second lever, so as to change the relationship between the depression rate of the accelerator pedal and the opening angle of the throttle valve.

A single spot fuel injector is energized only twice per revolution of the crankshaft of the engine so that under given operating conditions the injections coincide with the TDC and BDC positions of a piston of a selected cylinder of the engine. Under higher engine speed operation, the injection timing is advanced to improve the fuel distribution to the cylinders. When the engine operates at an engine speed below a predetermined level it is possible for the injector to be energized three times per revolution of the crankshaft.

A fuel injector valve comprises a main magnetic pole securely disposed within a casing and provided with an electromagnetic coil wound thereon, a valve seat member securely connected to the casing so as to be located opposite to the main magnetic pole tip section, a spherical valve member movably disposed within a valve chamber which is to be filled with fuel, and defined between the main magnetic pole tip section and the valve seat member, and an adapter member securely interposed between the main magnetic pole and the casing to secure the locational relationship therebetween, thereby securely achieving the locating and centering of the main magnetic pole.

An air control device regulates the amount of air flowing through an air passage bypassing a throttle valve place in an induction passage leading to an engine for an automotive vehicle so that the air flow can increase during warming up of the engine. A shutter mechanism for regulating the effective area for the air flow through the air passage is cylindrical, for example, including an inner cylindrical body and an outer cylindrical body which are rotatable to each other.

A fuel injection valve for an automotive vehicle is disclosed which is provided with a saw-toothed solenoid in place of an ordinary solenoid. In spite of a small size, the fuel injection valve thus improved can control fuel injection timing and period electromagnetically at a high speed under a high fuel pressure. The valve element can be controlled by a current signal flowing through the solenoid coil, so that the valve element is opened or closed against the force of valve spring.

A system for feedback control of the air/fuel mixing ratio in an internal combustion engine equipped with a carburetor. The control system has an air/fuel ratio detector of a gas sensor type which provides a feedback signal to a control circuit and a rotary valve which is operated by a stepping motor responsive to a control pulse signal produced by the control circuit to regulate the fuel feed rate so as to nullify a deviation of the detected actual air/fuel ratio from a preset air/fuel ratio. The control system may include two auxiliary air-admitting passages respectively connected to a main fuel passage and a slow fuel passage in the carburetor, and in this case the single rotary valve is designed and arranged so as to simultaneously control the admission of air into both of the two auxiliary air-admitting passages.

Disclosed is a fuel/air mixture supply system for an internal combustion engine of the single-point fuel injection type wherein, the intake manifold system is formed with a first fuel/air supply passage which inspires atmospheric air and which has fitted generally at a midpoint thereof a fuel injection valve which injects fuel into the inspired air. The fuel/air mixture then proceeds to a first set of branched passages, each one of which conducts the fuel/air mixture to a cylinder of the engine. Further, there is provided a second air supply passage which inspires atmospheric air and which branches into a second set of branched passages, each one of which conducts air to a cylinder of the engine. The first fuel/air supply passage is smaller than the second air supply passage, and the first set of branched passages are smaller than the second set of branched passages. The flow of air/fuel mixture in the first fuel/air supply passage is controlled by a first throttle valve, and the flow of air in the second air supply passage and/or the second branched passages is controlled by a regulating means responsive to the operation of the first throttle valve, so as to be substantially zero when the first throttle valve is open an amount less than a certain predetermined amount, while, when the first throttle valve is opened greater than the certain predetermined amount, the flow is progressively increased.

A fuel injection valve drive system is disclosed for use in an internal combustion engine including at least one solenoid operated fuel injection valve. The system comprises a first pulse generator for providing, in synchronism with rotation of the engine, a first pulse signal having a constant pulse width, a second pulse generator for providing a second pulse signal of pulse width dependent upon the amount of air introduced to the engine, first switch means responsive to a first pulse signal for allowing small current to flow through the solenoid coil of the fuel injection valve so as not to open the fuel injection valve, and second switch means responsive to a second pulse signal for allowing large current to flow through the solenoid coil so as to open the fuel injection valve. Means are provided for causing the second pulse generator to generate a second pulse signal a time after the first pulse generator generates a first pulse signal.

There is disclosed a fuel feeding device for an internal combustion engine equipped with an air regulator for feeding air through a bypass around a throttle valve and a fuel jetting valve for feeding fuel. An air passage outlet of said air regulator is open opposite to and facing said fuel jetting valve. The opening degree of said air regulator is controlled by a coil bimetal functioning in proportion to the temperature of the engine or through a step motor being driven through a controlling circuit detecting operation conditions of the engine.

A fuel injector valve for use in an internal combustion engine has a spherical valve member which is movable to be biased onto a valve seat by pressure differential between upstream and downstream sides of the valve member. A pressure responsive element is disposed within the electromagnetic valve and located opposite to the valve member in order to bias the valve member against the valve seat to close a fuel outlet when fuel pressure prevailing upstream of the valve member is lower than a predetermined level.

In a closed loop air-fuel mixture control system for carburetor-equipped internal combustion engines, an exhaust gas sensor provides a feedback signal to a control unit where the signal is modified to meet the control characteristics of the closed loop. The modified feedback signal is converted into digital pulses whose width varies with the amplitude of the feedback signal. Additional air is supplied to the engine through an air bleed in accordance with the magnitude of the analog feedback signal to provide a coarse control of air-fuel ratio and in response to the digital pulses to provide a fine control of the ratio. The mixture is controlled in a wide range of ratios to eliminate the need for calibration which would be required for fitting the closed loop system to the time-varying characteristics of individual carburetors.

Coarse and fine air supply control for closed-loop controlled carbureted

A carburetor is disclosed of the variable venturi type, which has a bypass passage bypassing the throttle valve, which is controlled during starting and warming up of the engine by a piston which adjusts its flow resistance, and which is urged against the biasing action of a spring by the vacuum suction downstream of the throttle valve. The maximum open position of this piston is controlled by a heat-sensitive element which advances this position in the direction of closing the bypass passage as the engine warms up, until it is completely closed when the engine is warm. Air is fed into a supplier which supplies fuel to the carburetor inlet passage to mix with the fuel supplied thereby in an amount which varies from a minimum when the vacuum downstream of the throttle valve is minimum to a maximum when the vacuum downstream of the throttle valve is maximum. Further, the amount of fuel supplied by the fuel supplier is adjusted to be greater when the engine temperature is lower than when it is higher. Thereby choking action is provided for a cold engine, and also a function of providing an enriched mixture upon acceleration during warming up is provided.
