A modified polysiloxane compound is represented by following Formula (1), in which Rto Rrepresent hydrocarbon groups selected from linear alkyl groups having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, branched chain alkyl groups having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, and cyclic alkyl groups having 3 to 6 carbon atoms; p and q represent average numbers of siloxane units indicated in parentheses, where p is a number of 1 or more and q is a number of 2 or more; and 'A' represents a group selected from a group represented by following Formula (2), a group represented by following Formula (3), and hydrogen atom. The modified polysiloxane compound has at least a siloxane unit wherein 'A' is the group represented by following Formula (2), and a siloxane unit wherein &#x201c;A&#x201d; is the group represented by following Formula (3).

A process for adjusting an intermolecular or intramolecular degree of acetyl substitution of cellulose acetate is disclosed. The process comprises ripening cellulose acetate in the presence of a catalyst, an acetyl donor, and water or an alcohol. The amount of water and the alcohol is in the range of 0.1 to 10 mol % based on the amount of the acetyl donor.

A surface-modified nanodiamond includes a base nanodiamond, and at least one polyglycerol-chain-containing group present on at least a surface portion of the base nanodiamond, in which the polyglycerol-chain-containing group is represented by following Formula (1):&#x2014;X&#x2014;R &#x2003;&#x2003;(1)wherein X represents single bond, &#x2014;NH&#x2014;, &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;COO&#x2014;, &#x2014;PH(&#x2550;O)O&#x2014;, or &#x2014;S&#x2014;; and R represents a polyglyceryl group. X may be single bond or &#x2014;NH&#x2014;. The surface-modified nanodiamond is highly soluble or dispersible satisfactorily stably in water and/or polar organic solvents.

A process for adjusting an intermolecular or intermolecular degree of acetyl substitution of cellulose acetate is disclosed. The process comprises ripening cellulose acetate in the presence of a catalyst, an acetyl donor, and water or an alcohol. This invention relates to aliphatic polyesters having a controlled thermal decomposition, hydrolizability, and biodegradability, in which OH terminals and COOH terminals are decreased through a ring-opening polymerization of a lactone and lactide by a mono alcohol or a metal alkoxide, or by decreasing both terminals through combining polymer terminals with diisocyanate. From a composition containing the polyesters, this invention provides a controlled release composition for agriculture. From a resin primarily containing fatty acid cellulose ester derivatives, this invention provides a base film for a marking film without volatilization and plasticizer migration problems; a picture image formable heat-sensitive transfer recording material with excellent strippability, coloring concentration, and brightness; a conductive coating composition with excellent storage stability, adhesion, and conductivity; a single-liquid type coating for a moisture-curable graft copolymer, and a non-toxic and non-irritating coating composition with excellent dryability. The copolymers of this invention also have excellent heat and impact resistance.

In the present invention, there are obtained aliphatic polyesters having a controlled thermal decomposing property, hydrolizability, and biodegradability, in which OH terminals and COOH terminals are decreased to 50% and 30%, respectively, through a ring-opening polymerization of a lactone and lactide by a mono alcohol having a high boiling point or a metal alkoxide, or by further decreasing both terminals through combining produced polymer terminals with a diisocyanate and, from a composition containing the polyesters, there is obtained a particle-state composition for agriculture and gardening in which a duration period of a fertilizing effect can be controlled, and which is not remained in soil by decomposition. From a resin primarily containing fatty acid cellulose ester derivatives, there are obtained a base film for a marking film which does not include a problem such as volatilization and migration of a plasticizer and a picture image formable heat-sensitive transfer recording material which is excellent in strippability, coloring concentration, and brightness, a conductive coating composition which is excellent in storage stability, adhesion, and conductivity, a single-liquid type coating and a moisture-curable graft copolymer, and a coating composition which have a non toxicity and nonirritating property and which are excellent in dryability. A copolymer in which average chain length in lactone and lactide units are controlled is excellent in heat resistance and impact resistance.

A thermoplastic resin composition can be obtained by adding about 0.1 to 20 parts by weight of a diene-series block copolymer (2) to 100 parts by weight of a resin composition containing a polycarbonate-series resin (1) as a basic component of which the proportion of terminal hydroxy groups relative to the whole of the terminals is 1 mole % or above (about 5 to 40 mole %). The polycarbonate-series resin base may further comprise a thermoplastic resin composition (3) such as a rubber-modified styrenic resin. The block copolymer component (2) includes an epoxy-modified block copolymer, etc. When added an organophosphorus compound as a flame retardant (4), or a fluorine-containing resin as a flame-retartant auxiliary (5), a halogen-free flame-retardant thermoplastic resin composition can be obtained. A thermoplastic resin with an improved flowability and impact strength can be obtained by modifying a polymer blend of the polycarbonate-series resin and the styrenic-series resin in quality.

This method provides a novel trimethylcatechol diester, i.e. 3,4,5-trimethylcatechol diester, at a high yield by reacting 2,6,6-trimethylcyclohexe-2-en-1,4-dione with an acylating agent in the presence of an acid catalyst. The acylating agent includes a C.sub.2-4 carboxylic acid anhydride (e.g. acetic anhydride) and a C.sub.2-4 carboxylic acid halide (e.g. acetyl chloride). The catalyst includes a protonic acid and a Lewis acid. Use of a polar solvent (e.g. halogenated hydrocarbon), as the reaction catalyst, results in an enhanced efficiency in the production of the object compound.
