An image forming apparatus and a control method for the apparatus are disclosed. In this image forming apparatus which has a printing unit selectively using a desired one of a plurality of types of ink cartridges and can receive monochromatic and color facsimile images, appropriate ink remaining amount detection or appropriate received facsimile image printing control can be performed in accordance with the type of received image and the type of loaded cartridge. In receiving/printing monochromatic and color images, a received image is discriminated as a color or monochromatic image, and the type of cartridge currently loaded into an ink-jet printing unit capable of performing printing operation by selecting one of a plurality of printing capabilities is discriminated. In accordance with these discrimination results, control is performed to automatically print the received image using the printing unit or stored it in an image memory or the like.

The present invention relates to a data communication apparatus which interfaces with a local area network (LAN), receives data from a transmission side, notifies a receiver on the LAN that the data was received and manages a plurality of data received individually for each notification destination. Notification that the plurality of individually-received data has been received is performed collectively. Thus, communication efficiency and communication traffic are improved even where a number of transmissions to the same destination and a number of receptions to the same destination are performed.

Apparatus for interfacing facsimile and computers on a LAN

A facsimile apparatus of this invention discriminates a reception-possible resolution of a reception-side facsimile apparatus. When the discriminated resolution does not coincide with the resolution of read document information, the original reading resolution is converted to one acceptable at reception side, and the converted resolution is displayed as a transmission resolution.
