A method for producing a surface-hardened material, comprising: an immersion step of immersing an iron steel material having nitrogen attached in the form of a solid solution on the surface thereof in a melt containing a chloride at a temperature ranging from 650&#xb0; C. to 900&#xb0; C.; and a cooling step of cooling the immersed iron steel material to a temperature equal to or lower than a martensitic transformation start temperature at a cooling rate equal to or higher than a lower critical cooling rare at which martensitic transformation starts.

The present invention is applicable to composite particles for composite dispersion plating used for forming a self-lubricating composite dispersion coating and a method of plating using such composite particles as well as a plating (coating) using the same. The purpose of the invention is to obtain a composite particle for composite dispersion plating which is comprised of a particle with an excellent capability of reducing the friction and a low or very low specific gravity, and a method of plating using such composite particles. In this invention, each of the composite particles includes a friction-reducing mother or core particle ( ) encapsulated with shell particles ( ) comprised of the same components as a base metal of a composite dispersion plating bath ( ). This provides a composite particle for composite dispersion plating which is comprised of a particle with an excellent capability of reducing the friction and a low or very low specific gravity. As a result, the composite particles can form an eutectic system in a plating layer without addition of any surfactant.

Composite particles for composite dispersion plating and method of plating therewith

A slide member having a highly lubricative and highly abrasion-resistant plating layer formed on the sliding surface thereof. The plating layer contains fine particles of graphite selected from flake graphite, vein graphite and/or amorphous graphite in its metallic matrix. The plating layer has a hardness of not less than 550 in terms of Hv and is produced by using a plating solution containing naphthalene sulfanate of formalin condensate as surface active agent. The matrix is preferable to be a Ni&mdash;P type metallic matrix and the dispersed fine particles of graphite are preferable having a size of 0.1 to 20 &mgr;m and are contained by 0.1 to 10 wt % relative to the matrix.

In an electroplating container in which at least one portion of an inside surface of the container is formed from a metal material serving as cathode or anode and an anode or cathode is placed in the container, a composite electroplating liquid containing metal ions and fine solid particles is introduced into a bottom portion of the container in such a manner that the introduced composite electroplating liquid spouts downward against an inside bottom surface of the container and is allowed to flow upward through a flow path formed between the anode and the cathode, and an electric current is applied between the anode and cathode so as to form a composite electroplating layer including the fine solid particles evenly distributed in a metal matrix on a surface of the cathode or anode facing the flow path.
