Devices are provided that include radar circuits arranged to send and receive radar signals that can be used to, for example, detect gestures performed in the vicinity of the device. Arrangements of the circuits and associated antennas allow for the device to have no bezel or a minimal bezel.

Human and gesture sensing in a computing device

The present disclosure describes systems and manufacturing techniques directed to a user equipment (UE) that can be bezel-less and has a loop antenna system for radiating and sensing millimeter-waves. The UE includes a housing and a display within the housing. The display is disposed within a display layer across a primary plane defining a front surface of the user equipment. The loop antenna system is within the housing and is configured to radiate a field of millimeter-waves within the spatial region and sense a reflection of the millimeter-waves by an object within the spatial region. Described manufacturing techniques include multi-layer fabrication techniques that are applicable to printed circuit boards and/or integrated circuit (IC) devices.

User equipment with an integrated antenna system for radiating and sensing millimeter-waves

The technology provides for a wireless charger. The wireless charger may have a transmitter antenna array, one or more detectors, one or more sensors, and one or more processors. For instance, the processors may determine, based on signals from the detectors, that one or more receiver antennas are located within a near-field range of the transmitter antenna array. The processors may then control the transmitter antenna array to focus electromagnetic waves on a first receiver antenna of the one or more receiver antennas, and control the transmitter antenna array to transmit power to the first receiver antenna. In some instances, the processors may further determine, based on signals from the sensors, that a person is located within the near-field range of the transmitter antenna array. Based on this determination, the processors may control the transmitter antenna array to stop transmitting power to the first receiver antenna.

Radiative wireless charging system

Techniques and apparatuses are described that implement a smart device with an integrated radar system. The radar integrated circuit is positioned towards an upper-middle portion of a smart device to facilitate gesture recognition and reduce a false-alarm rate associated with other non-gesture related motions of a user. The radar integrated circuit is also positioned away from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) antennas and a wireless charging receiver coil to reduce interference. The radar system operates in a low-power mode to reduce power consumption and facilitate mobile operation of the smart device. By limiting a footprint and power consumption of the radar system, the smart device can include other desirable features in a space-limited package (e.g., a camera, a fingerprint sensor, a display, and so forth).

Smart device with an integrated radar system

A tunable antenna system is provided for a wearable personal computing device, such as a smartwatch. The tunable antenna system includes at least two antennas configured for respective sets of frequency ranges. One or more radiating elements of the antennas are formed from portions of a metal bezel of the wearable personal computing device. For at least one of the antennas, an aperture tuner and an impedance tuner positioned within the metal bezel are provided, e.g., to tune between various communication bands. Non-conductive slits may be positioned within the metal bezel to provide isolation between the antennas. A ground plane of the antenna system may be formed by a metallic component of the wearable personal computing device. The antenna system can be insulated from a wearer's skin by a non-metallic back cover and optionally a glass back plate arranged to contact the wearer's skin or clothing during use.

Tunable antenna system for smart watch

A head mounted display (HMD) device includes a housing configured to mount on a face of a user, at least one display mounted in the housing, a wireless personal area network (WPAN) antenna mounted in a medial region of the housing, and first and second wireless local area network (WLAN) antennas located at respective lateral peripheries of the housing. The WPAN antenna includes a directional patch antenna comprising a feed line, a three-dimensional (3D) ground plane formed as a plurality of conductive sidewalls and a ground plane structure disposed at a first end of the sidewalls, wherein the ground plane structure is substantially perpendicular to the plurality of sidewalls. The WPAN antenna also includes a radiating surface disposed at a second end of the sidewalls opposite of the first end, wherein the radiating surface includes a patch antenna structure coupled to the feed line.
