A magnetometer with responsive material is provided that includes a PT symmetric assembly. The PT symmetric assembly includes gain material and responsive material that are positioned to achieve PT symmetry. The responsive material is configured to shift a resonance frequency of point defects in response to a magnetic field. A microwave antenna is configured to generate a microwave field of varying frequencies that engage the responsive material. A controller is configured to adjust a tunable laser source that is input into the PT symmetric assembly based on an output of the PT symmetric assembly to cause a gain generated by the gain material to match a loss caused by the responsive material. The controller is further configured to determine a strength of the magnetic field by determining one of a deviation from the exceptional point and an amplitude of the gain needed to reach the exceptional point.

Systems for an integrated photonic responsive material sensor are described herein. In certain embodiments, a system includes a carrier wafer that includes a cavity formed in the carrier wafer. The carrier wafer also includes a responsive waveguide coupled to the cavity, the responsive waveguide formed from responsive material responsive to a force by shifting a resonance frequency of point defects in the responsive material in response to the force, wherein a pump light is directed to the responsive waveguide to prepare the responsive waveguide to absorb a probe light when exposed to a radio frequency at the point defect resonance frequency. Additionally, the system includes components coupled to the carrier wafer, wherein the components include a probe light source that generates the probe light, wherein the components are positioned in relation to the carrier wafer to couple the probe light into the cavity.

Apparatuses, systems, and methods for sample testing

A photonics device for threshold magnetometry includes an absorbent material with nonlinear optical susceptibility, such as a diamond material with nitrogen vacancy defects, that is disposed in an optical resonator. The optical resonator receives light from an input source and includes nonlinear optical properties that enable the resonator to undergo a nonlinear photon generation process at a certain threshold power level to generate photons at distinct frequencies from the input light. The absorbent material absorbs photons entering the resonator when excited, which causes the threshold power level to shift as a function of the absorption. This may cause the optical resonator to stop generating photons via the nonlinear photon generation process and output a change in power. The change in power can be used to determine the characteristics of a present magnetic field.

Systems and method for the delivery of a pump laser using optical diffraction are described herein. In certain embodiments, a system includes a substrate and a waveguide layer formed on the substrate. The waveguide layer includes a first waveguide of a first material configured to receive a probe laser for propagating within the first waveguide. The waveguide layer additionally includes a second waveguide configured to receive a pump laser for propagating within the second waveguide. Further, the waveguide layer includes one or more diffractors configured to direct a portion of the pump laser out of the second waveguide and through the first waveguide.

Delivery of pump laser into probe waveguide using optical diffraction

A method includes receiving collimated light from an optical imaging system and dividing the received light into multiple bands of wavelength. Each band is refocused onto a corresponding diffraction grating having an amplitude function matched to a point spread function (PSF) of the optical imaging system. The light that is not filtered out by the diffraction grating is transmitted onto a corresponding pixel array. An image is reconstructed from data provided by the pixel arrays for each band. The intensity of light scattered by each diffraction grating may be detected, with the image being reconstructed as a function of an average value of detected intensity of scattered light used to scale the known zero-order mode profile, which is added to the image on the pixel array.

Sub-diffraction endoscopic modal imaging systems and methods are disclosed herein. A single multi-mode fiber endoscope incorporated into a modal imaging system can facilitate the imaging of inner portions of a patient's body at a quantum-limited resolution. One method of sub-diffraction endoscopic modal imaging includes collecting incoming radiation with a multi-mode fiber, separating the output into multiple modes, and measuring an energy level of each mode to construct an image of the received incoming radiation.

An acousto-optic waveguide device comprises a substrate comprising a first material having a first refractive index and a first acoustic velocity; a cladding layer over the substrate, the cladding layer comprising a second material having a second refractive index that is distinct from the first refractive index, the second material having a second acoustic velocity that is distinct from the first acoustic velocity; and an optical core surrounded by the cladding layer, the optical core comprising a third material having a third refractive index that is higher that the first refractive index and the second refractive index, the third material having a third acoustic velocity that is distinct from the first acoustic velocity and the second acoustic velocity. The cladding layer that surrounds the optical core has a thickness configured to substantially confine acoustic waves to the cladding layer when an optical signal propagates through the optical core.

Etchless acoustic waveguiding in integrated acousto-optic waveguides

An embodiment of a waveguide has a Brillouin bandwidth, and includes cladding and a core. The cladding includes first layers of a first material, each first layer having a physical characteristic of approximately a first value, and includes second layers of a second material, each second layer having the physical characteristic of approximately a second value, the second layers alternating with the first layers such that the Brillouin bandwidth is wider than the Brillouin bandwidth would be if the cladding excluded the first layers or excluded the second layers. For example, the first and second cladding layers can be formed from different materials, or can be formed having different values of a physical characteristic such as thickness, acoustic velocity, or index of refraction. Such a waveguide can facilitate alignment of the waveguide's optical bandwidth with the waveguide's Brillouin bandwidth because the Brillouin bandwidth is widened compared to conventional waveguides.

Bias error in a resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG) is diminished by reducing polarization mismatch between a polarization Eigenstate of optical signals propagating inside of a resonator of the RFOG and the polarization of optical signals being injected into the resonator of the RFOG. The polarization mismatch is reduced by filtering the optical signals circulating in the resonator and the optical signals injected into the resonator with common polarizers.

Apparatus and method for diminished bias error due to polarization mismatch

In one embodiment, a method is provided. The method comprises: spin polarizing alkali atoms in a cavity; shifting resonant frequencies of the cavity at a rate proportional to a magnitude of a magnetic field incident upon the cavity; reflecting modulated right hand circularly polarized light and modulated left hand circularly polarized light from the cavity; transforming the reflected modulated right hand circularly polarized light to reflected modulated vertically polarized light, and the reflected modulated left hand circularly polarized light to reflected modulated horizontally polarized modulated light; generating a first error signal having an amplitude proportional to the shift in a resonant frequency corresponding to the reflected modulated vertically polarized light and a sign indicative of whether a frequency of the reflected modulated vertically polarized light is above or below the corresponding resonant frequency; generating a second error signal having an amplitude proportional to the shift in a resonant frequency corresponding to the reflected modulated horizontally polarized light and a sign indicative of whether a frequency of the reflected modulated horizontally polarized light is above or below the corresponding resonant frequency; adjusting a carrier frequency of the modulated right hand circularly polarized light in response to the first error signal; adjusting a carrier frequency of the modulated left hand circularly polarized light in response to the second error signal; and generating a measured Larmor frequency.

System and method for a cavity magnetometer using a pound-drever-hall detector

An embodiment of an integrated waveguide is configured for reducing the level of Brillouin scattering, and for reducing the levels of at least some of the unwanted effects of Brillouin scattering. Such an integrated waveguide has a Brillouin gain, includes a cladding, and includes a core disposed within the cladding and configured to cause the Brillouin gain to be less than the Brillouin gain would be if the core were straight. For example, the core can be configured as a non-straight (e.g., meandering) core to reduce the Brillouin gain in an integrated waveguide, and, therefore, to reduce a level of coherent Brillouin scattering of an electromagnetic wave propagating through the waveguide. Therefore, a core so configured can reduce the energy of a counter-propagating Stokes wave induced by the propagating electromagnetic wave as compared to an otherwise comparable waveguide having a straight core.

A radio-frequency atomic magnetometer comprises a laser, a photodetector, a vapor chamber, wherein the vapor chamber is in an optical path of laser light between the laser and photodetector, a circular polarizer configured to circularly polarize laser light emitted by the laser, wherein a circularly polarized laser beam is configured to pump into an oriented state, spins of atoms in the vapor chamber and to probe the atoms of the vapor chamber, wherein probing includes detecting a local radio frequency field; and a set of direct current (DC) field coils comprising at least one DC field coil, wherein the set of DC field coils is configured to generate a DC magnetic field oriented at 45 degrees relative to the optical axis of the laser light emitted by the laser and directed toward the vapor chamber; the set of DC field coils further configured to have adjustable DC magnetic field strength.

Single beam radio frequency atomic magnetometer

A ring laser gyroscope (RLG) is provided. The RLG includes a primary resonator, a secondary resonator, and an optical source to provide a pump field. The pump field in the primary resonator stimulates an optical gain curve at a first stokes wave frequency. A first order SBS field stimulates a second optical gain curve at a second stokes wave frequency. The second order SBS gain gives rise to a frequency-shifted field propagating in the first direction. The fraction of the pump field that couples out of the primary resonator, through the secondary resonator, and out of the secondary resonator is larger than the fraction of: the first order SBS field that couples out of the primary resonator, through the secondary resonator, and out of the secondary resonator; and a second order SBS field that couples out of the primary resonator, through the secondary resonator, and out of the secondary resonator.
