An exhaust system for use with a combustion engine is disclosed. The exhaust system may have an exhaust passageway, a reduction catalyst, a reductant injector, and a controller. The controller may have a NO/reductant relationship map, and be configured to receive a first input relating to an amount of NOwithin the exhaust passageway upstream of the reduction catalyst, and reference the NO/reductant relationship map to determine an initial amount of reductant that should be directed into the exhaust passageway based on the first input. The controller may also be configured to receive a second input relating to performance of the reduction catalyst, determine an adjustment to the initial amount of reductant based on the second input, and regulate operation of the reductant injector to direct an adjusted amount of reductant into the exhaust passageway. The controller may further be configured to update the NO/reductant relationship map based on the determined adjustment.

Exhaust system implementing in situ calibration

An engine exhaust aftertreatment system including an catalyst-based device configured to reduce an amount of NOx in exhaust gases produced by an engine using reductant stored in the catalyst-based device. The system includes a controller configured to determine a starting quantity of stored reductant in the catalyst-based device at the start of the engine. The starting quantity is based on a shutdown quantity of stored reductant in the catalyst-based device determined at the shutdown of the engine.

A system for heating a reducing agent associated with a reducing agent distribution system. The system may include a reducing agent containment device, a distribution device connected to the reducing agent containment device, and at least one heating component associated with the reducing agent containment device. A temperature sensor may be configured to determine a temperature of the reducing agent and may be disposed at least partially within the reducing agent containment device. A pressure sensor may be associated with the distribution device and configured to determine a pressure characteristic of the system. A controller may be configured to receive input from the temperature sensor and the pressure sensor and configured to send input to the at least one heating component based on the input received from the temperature sensor and the pressure sensor.

System and method for heating a reducing agent associated with a reducing agent distribution system

An exhaust control system for use with a combustion engine having a reduction catalyst and a supply of reductant is disclosed. The exhaust control system may have a first sensor located to generate a first signal indicative of an amount of a constituent within the exhaust entering the reduction catalyst, a second sensor located to generate a second signal indicative of an amount of the constituent remaining within the exhaust exiting the reduction catalyst, and a third sensor configured to generate a third signal indicative of an amount of reductant within the supply. The exhaust control system may additionally have a controller in communication with the first sensor, the second sensor, and the third sensor. The controller may be configured to determine a change in an efficiency of the reduction catalyst based on the first and second signals, and diagnose the change in efficiency based on the third signal.

Exhaust control system having diagnostic capability

An engine system includes an integrated engine and aftertreatment control system via an electronic aftertreatment controller that is in communication with the electronic engine controller. An aftertreatment control algorithm is operable to generate an exhaust control signal and a reductant dosing control signal. The dosing control signal is used to control a flow rate of a reductant (e.g. urea) injection rate into the exhaust system for facilitating a reduction reaction with NOx in the exhaust flow at a suitable downstream catalyst location. The exhaust control signal is communicated to the electronic engine controller, which responds by altering engine operation to change some aspect of the engine exhaust. In one specific example, an ammonia slip event precondition is detected by the electronic aftertreatment controller, and an exhaust control signal in the form of an increase NOx request is communicated to the engine controller, which responds by altering engine operation to increase NOx output in the hopes of preempting the expected ammonia slip event prior to its actual occurrence to maintain undesirable emissions low at the tailpipe.

Integrated engine and exhaust after treatment system and method of operating same

An after-treatment component detection system may include an exhaust system configured to include an after-treatment component configured to remove one or more constituents of the exhaust gases. The detection system may include an upstream temperature sensor configured to measure temperature upstream from the after-treatment component, a downstream temperature sensor configured to measure temperature downstream from the after-treatment component, and a controller. The controller may be configured to receive signals indicative of upstream temperature measurements from the upstream sensor and signals indicative of downstream temperature measurements from the downstream sensor and determine an upstream rate of temperature change and a downstream rate of temperature change. The controller may also be configured to compare the upstream rate of temperature change to the downstream rate of temperature change and generate a fault if the upstream rate of temperature change and the downstream rate of temperature change differ by less than a predetermined amount.

After-treatment component detection system

A method for transforming machine sensor data between a time domain and a combustion pulse domain is disclosed. The method may include determining a number of pulse events per rotation of a shaft and determining a sampling rate per pulse event. The method may also include sampling one or more sensors at the sampling rate per pulse event. The method also may include transforming the samples into the combustion pulse domain.

An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system for an engine and a method of operating that system is disclosed. The system has a conduit arrangement for conducting exhaust gas from an exhaust side of the engine to an intake side of the engine, a valve arrangement configured for controlling the amount of exhaust gas to be recirculated and a conduit arrangement for providing intake air to the intake side of the engine. A sensor arrangement is provided and is configured to sense at least one parameter indicative of the humidity of the recirculated exhaust gas and the intake air at the intake side of the engine. A control arrangement is configured to receive a signal from the first sensor arrangement and further is configured to control the valve arrangement in response to a determination by the control arrangement that the first parameter is outside a desired range for low-NOemission during a subsequent combustion period.

Exhaust gas recirculation system and method of operating such system

A method of controlling an HCCI engine-based power system may include receiving performance information relating to a desired operating state for the HCCI engine-based power system, evaluating operational information associated with a current operating state of the HCCI engine-based power system, and determining one or more control parameter values based on the performance information and the operational information. The method may further include predicting a response of the HCCI engine-based power system based on the one or more control parameter values and determining whether the response satisfies one or more desired performance characteristics associated with the HCCI engine-based power system. If the response satisfies the one or more desired performance characteristics, control of at least one component of the HCCI engine-based power system may be enabled based on the one or more control parameter values. Further, if the predicted response does not satisfy the one or more desired performance characteristics, the method may include varying the one or more control parameter values to provide an updated set of control parameters and implementing the updated set of control parameters to control the at least one component of the HCCI engine-based power system.

A method for providing a virtual sensor network based system. The method may include obtaining project data descriptive of a virtual sensor network to be used in a control system of a machine; establishing a virtual sensor network including a plurality of virtual sensors based on the project data. Each virtual sensor may have a model type, at least one input parameter, and at least one output parameter. The method may also include recording model information, measurement data, and performance information of the virtual sensor network including the plurality of virtual sensors; creating one or more calibration certificates of the virtual sensor network including a plurality of virtual sensors based on the model information, the measurement data, and the performance information; and generating a documentation package associated with the virtual sensor network. The documentation package may include at least an identification, the project data, and at least one calibration certificate of the virtual sensor network including a plurality of virtual sensors.

Virtual sensor network (VSN) based control system and method

An exhaust system for use with a combustion engine is disclosed. The exhaust system may have an exhaust passageway, and a reduction catalyst disposed within the exhaust passageway. The exhaust system may also have a first sensor located to generate a first signal indicative of an operational parameter of the reduction catalyst, and a second sensor located to generate a second signal indicative of a performance parameter of the reduction catalyst. The exhaust system may further have an injection device located to inject reductant upstream of the reduction catalyst, and a controller in communication with the combustion engine, the first sensor, the second sensor, and the injection device. The controller may be configured to determine a NOproduction of the combustion engine, determine an amount of reductant that should be injected based on the NOproduction and the first signal, and adjust the amount based on the second signal.

Exhaust system implementing feedforward and feedback control

A prediction based engine control system is disclosed. The engine control system may have sensor configured to sense a current engine operation and generate a corresponding signal and a controller in communication with the sensor. The controller may be configured to receive the signal, compare the current engine operation to an allowable range of engine operation, predict a future engine operation based on the signal, and limit current engine operation based on the prediction, even when the current engine operation is within the allowable range of operation.

Prediction based engine control system and method

A method is provide for providing sensors for a machine. The method may include obtaining data records including data from a plurality of sensors for the machine and determining a virtual sensor corresponding to one of the plurality of sensors. The method may also include establishing a virtual sensor process model of the virtual sensor indicative of interrelationships between at least one sensing parameters and a plurality of measured parameters based on the data records and obtaining a set of values corresponding to the plurality of measured parameters. Further, the method may include calculating the values of the at least one sensing parameters substantially simultaneously based upon the set of values corresponding to the plurality of measured parameters and the virtual sensor process model and providing the values of the at least one sensing parameters to a control system.

The method may include determining a desired amount of NOx production for at least one engine cylinder at a first time and determining at least one engine operating parameter to produce the desired amount of NOx using a feed-forward neural network.

NOx control using a neural network

A method of operating an internal combustion engine is provided. The method includes injecting a first fuel charge into at least one cylinder of the engine. The method further includes determining a value indicative of at least one of a cylinder pressure and a rate of change in cylinder pressure. The method further includes injecting a second fuel charge into the at least one cylinder, upon the occurrence of a predetermined contingency, which may be a determined cylinder pressure or rate in change thereof exceeding a predetermined threshold. An internal combustion engine is further provided, including an electronic controller having a control algorithm. The control algorithm includes software for determining a value indicative of at least one of a cylinder pressure and a rate of change in cylinder pressure of at least one cylinder of the engine. The control algorithm further includes logic for transitioning a fuel injector of the engine between modes, based upon the occurrence of a predetermined contingency, which may be the determined value.
