A process for surface modifying a variety of polymeric support surfaces is disclosed in which a predetermined modifying polymer is irreversibly absorbed onto essentially all the surfaces of the support polymer accessible to the modifying polymer. The modifying polymer is selected to impart the desired surface characteristics to the modified polymeric surface.

Anisotropic hollow fiber membranes comprising polymer of acrylonitrile and styrene are prepared by extruding a solution of a hollow fiber-forming polymer comprising polymer of acrylonitrile and styrene in a liquid carrier through an annular spinnerette to form a hollow fiber precursor, and the hollow fiber precursor is coagulated in a liquid coagulant comprising water to form a hollow fiber membrane. The liquid carrier used in the method comprises N,N-dimethylformamide and preferably contains non-solvent for the polymer of acrylonitrile and styrene. The hollow fiber membranes have a homogeneously-formed thin selective skin on an open cellular support and exhibit high resistance to collapse. The membranes are especially useful for the separation of gases.

Multicomponent membranes for gas separation are disclosed which are effective for separating at least one gas from gaseous mixtures by permeation wherein the multicomponent membranes are comprised of a coating in occluding contact with a porous separation membrane. The multicomponent membranes advantageously exhibit less resistance to permeate gas flow for the at least one gas than for at least one remaining gas in the gaseous mixture. For at least one pair of gases the separation factor of the multicomponent membrane is significantly greater than the determined intrinsic separation factor of the material of the coating. Processes and apparatus for gas separation utilizing the multicomponent membranes are also disclosed.

Process for removing sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from gaseous mixtures which comprises contacting such mixtures, in the presence of a reducing agent comprising carbon monoxide, hydrogen, or mixtures thereof, with a solid reagent comprising calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, or mixtures thereof at temperatures in excess of about 700.degree. C.
