Water-based compositions that resist dirt pick-up

Water-based compositions that are resistant to dirt pickup, efflorescence, tannin bleed-through and surfactant leaching are described. The water-based composition includes a latex or water-dispersible polymer and a non-VOC UV-VIS (preferably, ultraviolet) absorber as a dirt pickup resistance additive. Methods of making water-based compositions including a non-VOC UV-VIS absorber as an additive are also described.

Dirt pick-up resistant composition

A latex emulsion that includes an aqueous carrier liquid and a latex copolymer formed from reactants comprising butyl methacrylate, wherein the reactants comprise at least 20 wt. % a vinyl monomer, based on the total weight of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the latex copolymer. A homopolymer formed from the vinyl monomer preferably exhibits a glass transition temperature of between about −10° C. and about 30° C. A coating formed from the latex emulsion preferably exhibits a dry adhesion of greater than about 4 pounds per linear inch when applied between a thermoplastic polyolefin roofing membrane and a plywood roofing substrate at an average coat weight of about 6 lbs/100 ftand subjected to 180° peel testing according to ASTM D903 with a 2-inch per minute pull rate. The latex emulsion may include a second latex copolymer or stage, and may be used as part of an aqueous adhesive composition.

Aqueous adhesive compositions

Coating compositions or paint having a pigment blended with a polymer system including one or more latex polymers, wherein the polymer system contains an alkali-soluble resin having an acid value and molecular weight and provided in a preferably desired amount to demonstrate optimal performance characteristics of washability, stain resistance or scrubability without negatively impacting block resistance, especially when neutralized with a low-volatility base.

Water-based coating compositions or paint having improved gloss retention, including a latex or water-dispersible polymer, a UV-VIS absorber comprising a substituted benzophenone capable of being a free radical generator, a hindered amine light stabilizer, and optionally a low-VOC coalescent provided in a preferably desired amount. A composition comprising a blend a UV-VIS absorber comprising a substituted benzophenone capable of being a free radical generator, a hindered amine light stabilizer, and a low-VOC coalescent, providing a thermally-stable coalescent that can be used in a paint formulation for gloss retention. Gloss retention of paints containing the UV-VIS absorber and hindered amine light stabilizer being markedly improved over paints that do not have both components present.

A latex emulsion may include an aqueous carrier liquid and a latex copolymer formed from reactants comprising butyl methacrylate, wherein the reactants include at least 20 wt. % butyl methacrylate, based on the total weight of ethylenically unsaturated monomers used to make the latex copolymer. A coating formed from the latex emulsion exhibits a wet adhesion to a thermoplastic polyolefin roofing membrane of greater than about 1 pound per linear inch when tested using fabric embedded peel adhesion testing per ASTM C794. The latex emulsion may be used as part of an aqueous coating composition or a roofing system including a polymeric roofing membrane.

Coating compositions for polymeric roofing materials

The present invention is directed to a coating composition or paint comprising a multistage latex with at least first and second stages, wherein the composition or paint is substantially free of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and capable of film formation even in the absence of coalescent agents. The base paint formulation is capable of being tinted at a point-of-sale (i.e. in-store) using a colorant composition of a type and quantity required to produce a paint of desired color and finish. The paints, show improved block resistance, scrub resistance and tack resistance. Rheological techniques as described herein may be used to determine tack resistance, print resistance, and other performance characteristics.

Stain-blocking polymers, as well as primers, kits, and methods that include such polymers, wherein the stain-blocking polymer is an emulsion latex polymer including interpolymerized monomers including: at least 1 wt-%, based on the total weight of the interpolymerized monomers, of one or more acrylic acid ester monomers of Formula (I):RO&#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;CH&#x2550;CHwherein: R is a branched alkyl group having a tertiary carbon atom, a cycloaliphatic group, or a combination thereof; optionally, one or more (meth)acrylate monomers selected from n-butyl (meth)acrylate, ethylhexyl (meth)acrylate, methyl (meth)acrylate, and combinations thereof; optionally, one or more wet adhesion monomers; and optionally, styrene; and wherein the stain-blocking primer includes at least 10 wt-%, based on the total nonvolatile weight of the primer, of the emulsion latex polymer; an aqueous carrier; and optionally, one or more additives selected from a surfactant, thickener, coalescent, biocide, mildewcide, colorant, and combinations thereof.
