A process is provided for applying multi-component composite coating compositions to substrates to provide sound damping and print-through resistance. The process includes applying at least one first coating composition to a surface of the substrate; applying at least one second coating composition over the first; and curing one or both of the first and second compositions, thereby forming a multi-layered coated substrate. The coating compositions may be applied by a method selected from spraying, extruding, brushing, and/or dipping.

Process for applying multi-component composite coatings to substrates to provide sound damping and print-through resistance

Compositions are provided which contain (a) one or more polysiloxanes comprising at least one reactive functional group; a plurality of particles; and optionally, one or more curing agents comprising at least one functional group that is reactive with any reactive functional group of polysiloxane (a). Additionally, a process for applying the multi-component composite coatings described above to a substrate and coated substrates are provided. A process for preparing the coating compositions also is provided. The multi-component composite coating compositions of the invention provide highly scratch resistant color-plus-clearcoatings capable of retaining scratch resistance after weathering.

Coating compositions having improved scratch resistance, coated substrates and methods related thereto

Coating compositions are provided which are formed from components comprising (a) at least one polysiloxane comprising at least one reactive functional group; (b) at least one reactant comprising at least one functional group that is reactive with at least one functional group selected from the at least one reactive functional group of the at least one polysiloxane and at least one functional group of at least one reactant; and (c) a plurality of particles, wherein each component is different, and wherein the at least one reactive functional group of the at least one polysiloxane and the at least one functional group of the at least one reactant are substantially nonreactive with the particles. A multi-component composite coating composition formed from a basecoat and a topcoat deposited from the curable coating composition also is provided. The multi-component composite coating compositions of the invention provide highly scratch resistant color-plus-clearcoatings capable of retaining scratch resistance after weathering.

Coating compositions are provided which include a polysiloxane comprising at least one reactive functional group and at least one material comprising at least one reactive functional group. Also provided are multi-layer composite coatings formed from a basecoat deposited from a pigmented coating composition and a topcoat applied over the basecoat, the topcoat deposited from the aforementioned coating composition. A method for improving the scratch resistance of a coated substrate, as well as coated substrates also are provided. Flexible coating compositions having improved scratch resistance, coated substrates and methods related thereto

A composition having sealing and sound dampening properties is disclosed which comprises one or more polyepoxides comprising at least two epoxide groups per molecule; a thermoplastic polyester polymer; a curing agent adapted to react with the polyepoxides; inorganic particles having an oil absorption value of less than 70; and inorganic microparticles different from the previously mentioned inorganic particles, the inorganic microparticles having an average particle size prior to incorporation into the composition ranging from 0.5 to 200 microns. Multilayer composites, coated substrates, and methods for forming sound dampening coatings on a metallic substrate are also provided.

The multi-component composite coatings of the invention provide highly scratch resistant color-plus-clearcoatings capable of retaining scratch resistance after weathering.

Cured coatings having improved scratch resistance, coated substrates and methods thereto

The present invention provides methods for forming composite coatings on substrates including the steps of: (A) applying an aqueous primary coating composition to at least a portion of a surface of a substrate, the primary coating composition including: (1) at least one thermosettable dispersion including polymeric microparticles having functionality adapted to react with a crosslinking material, the microparticles including: (a) at least one acid functional reaction product of ethylenically unsaturated monomers; and (b) at least one hydrophobic polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 500; and (2) at least one crosslinking material, to form a substantially uncured primary coating thereon; (B) applying a secondary coating composition to at least a portion of the primary coating formed in step (A) without substantially curing the primary coating to form a substantially uncured secondary coating thereon; and (C) applying a clear coating composition to at least a portion of the secondary coating formed in step (B) without substantially curing the secondary coating to form a substantially uncured composite coating thereon.

Methods for forming composite coatings on substrates

A conductive primer coating composition comprising a resinous film forming binder, a fibrous, carbonaceous material and a light colored pigment. This coating composition may be applied to plastic or other substrates having low electrical conductivity to form a light colored, conductive coating. The application of this first coating and subsequent coatings by the electrostatic method of application is facilitated.

A method of forming a multilayer coating on a substrate utilizes a pigmented aqueous based coating composition. The aqueous based coating composition contains a polymeric film-forming resin and as an additive from about 1 to about 40 percent by weight based on the resin solids of the composition of an oligomeric ester having an acid value of from about 100 to about 500 of the structure: ##STR1## where X is the residue of a polyol containing from 1 to 50 carbon atoms per hydroxyl group after reaction with an acid or an anhydride, R is an organic moiety from the acid or anhydride and A has an average value of about 2 or greater. The coating compositions are particularly advantageous as metallic pigmented coating compositions for automotive basecoat applications because they exhibit excellent resistance to mottling, have good flop and have reduced sensitivity to fluctuations in relative humidity.
