A water reducible resin for use in a coating composition is produced by grafting in organic solvent a thermoplastic polymer onto a thermosetting polymer that has been copolymerized with acid group-containing monomers to render the resultant polymer water soluble. Thermoplastic polymer is also grafted onto a phosphatized polyepoxide for the sake of adhesion of a coating to a substrate. A film formed from a waterborne coating composition containing the grafted polymers as a binder has both the toughness properties characteristic of a thermoplastic and the flexibility properties of a thermosetting resin.

A water dispersible, modified polyurethane which is the reaction product of polyisocyanate, polyether polyol, modifying agent containing at least two active hydrogen moieties and capping agent. The modified polyurethane is preferably prepared by reacting the polyisocyanate, the polyether polyol and the modifying agent and then adding the capping agent. The modified polyurethane resists microbial attack, exhibits superior efficiency in thickening aqueous compositions and imparts improved leveling. Included among the modifying agents are ethylene diamine, 1,6-diaminohexane, 1,10-diaminodecane, N-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine, succinic acid, suberic acid, sebacic acid, 1,10-decanedicarboxylic acid, 1,4-benzene-dicarboxylic acid, ethanolamine, 2-(ethylamino)ethanol, and p-carboxyphenol and mixtures thereof.

A thermally stable thickener is composed of a stabilizing agent and a water dispersible polyurethane. The stabilizing agent is a smectite-type clay having a cation exchange capacity of at least 75 milliequivalents per 100 grams of clay, 100% active clay basis. The water dispersible polyurethane must possess the property that it forms an aqueous composition that experiences a decrease in Stormer viscosity upon thermal aging. Aqueous compositions incorporating the thermally stable thickener may be exposed to extended periods at elevated temperatures without substantially affecting the level of thickening.

The present invention is directed to improved separatory devices employing polyurethane forming compositions, such as hollow fiber separatory devices intended to be used in biomedical applications. The separatory device employs at least one separatory membrane, suitable for the intended end use application, which is secured, potted or sealed in a housing using a cured polyurethane composition. The improvement comprises utilizing as the potting agent a polyurethane composition comprising the reaction product of an NCO-terminated prepolymer and a hydroxy terminated lactone derived polyester. The lactone polyester comprises the reaction product of a lactone such as caprolactone, and a polyol such as 1,6-hexane diol. The lactone derived polyester imparts to the polyurethane-forming composition a desirable balance of properties, including low mix viscosity, high reactivity, i.e., low gel and demold times, and acceptable hardness values, when used as a potting agent in biomedical separatory devices.
