Device for the passive monitoring and reporting of printer-related data on USB cables

Provided is a computer-implemented system and method for monitoring printer-related data on USB cables. A USB-compatible device comprising a field programmable gate array and a microprocessor is placed in-line between a non-networked computer and a printer and monitors the line for print-related data. Once detected, the print-related data is transmitted via a radio frequency to a base station. The base station subsequently compiles the print-related data and relays the data to a printer reporting system.

System and method for the passive monitoring and reporting of printer-related data on USB cables

The invention relate to an apparatus and a method for monitoring all printers in an enterprise. The method includes for each transaction, authenticating a customer associated with the enterprise and obtaining a session ticket. The method also includes executing a printer list fetcher for downloading a list of in-service printer and print scan load frequency for each location with in the enterprise and executing a scheduler for implementing different categories of scans. The method further includes executing a network scan on a computer network to obtain information for all printers attached to the computer network, executing a local scan on each computer that is attached to a non-network printer to obtain information for all non-network printers in the enterprise and executing a port scan to obtain information for all non-cataloged printers. The method also includes compiling all scanned information, obtained from executing the network scan, the local scan and the port scan, in a file and dispatching the file to an external server and using the file in the external server to provide printer status information and usages for each printer in the enterprise.

The invention relates to a printer component for monitoring usage on non-network printers. The printer component includes a desktop component installed on a network computer to which a non-network printer is attached. The desktop component is for obtaining printer status information from each non-network printer attached to the network computer. The printer component also includes a server component installed on an external server. A job listener is attached to the network computer to obtain printer status information for each non-network printer. The server component mergers information obtained from the desktop component with previously stored printer information to provide printer status information for all network and non-network printers within an enterprise.

A method for installing a print monitor device and notifying an installer after the print monitor device is installed. In one aspect of the method, a print monitor device is associated with a customer location, installed at the customer location, and then the print monitor device is registered in a centralized repository. In another aspect, after the print monitor device is registered, a notification is sent to an installer. In another aspect, the notification is a message which includes information about the print monitor device and the devices the print monitor device has discovered and is monitoring in a customer location.

The invention relates to a printer component for monitoring usage on non-network printers. The method, for example, can&#x2014;in certain embodiments&#x2014;include transforming printer data into an extensible markup language (XML). The method can also include encapsulating the transformed printer data. The method can further include transmitting the encapsulated printer data. The transforming the printer data and the encapsulating the printer data can be designed so as to maintain security, reliability, and privacy of the printer data. The method can also, in some embodiments, include capturing complete printer data by reading the encapsulated printer data. The method can further include scanning a network to obtain the printer data, before transforming the printer data into the XML. The scanning can include at least one of the following scans: a simple network management protocol scan, a non shared desktop printers scan, or a jet direct scan. The method can be implemented by a printer service provider configured to monitor printer usage within an enterprise.
